JOB DESCRIPTION

Post: Hospice Speciality Doctor / GPwSI

Sessions: Full / part time or sessional

Location: Somerton House, Somerton Road

Reports to: Consultants in Palliative Medicine

Responsible to: Medical Lead

Minimum Qualifications: Full registration with GMC and 3 years’ post registration experience.

Date of commencement: August 2017 for 6 months in the first instance with the opportunity to extend

The Role

Northern Ireland Hospice is a charitable company (limited by guarantee). The position will include responsibilities within all areas of adult patient care, including in-patients, out- patients, community and day hospice patients. The role is supported by a strong multidisciplinary team including Nurse Specialists, AHP’s, chaplaincy and social work. The post-holder will join the existing team of Consultants in Palliative Medicine, 1 specialty doctor, 2 specialty trainees and 1 core medicine trainee.

The Adult NI Hospice provides Specialist Palliative Care in the following areas:

 A new purpose built facility with 18 in-patient beds

 An onsite Day Hospice, which also provides dementia specific care.

 8 Community Specialist Palliative Care teams across the province. These teams of Hospice Nurse Specialists link with Palliative Consultants across 4 Trust areas as well as working closely with GP’s and the wider primary care team. These Trust areas are also receiving a Hospice at Home service - including trained nursing staff respite within the patient’s own home and overnight care.

 Outpatient clinics.

 Domiciliary visits on request.

 24 hour advisory service for all health care professionals.

 An active education programme with the potential to undertake facilitated research

HR/Job Description/June 2017 Responsibilities

1. To provide the highest standards of medical care within NI Hospice and its associated services.

2. To provide day to day medical input into Day Hospice, Out-patients, community services and the In-Patient Unit.

3. To provide advice to General Practitioners and hospital doctors where appropriate.

4. To provide advice to Community Specialist Palliative Care Nurses as appropriate.

5. To contribute to the educational programme of the Hospice.

6. To keep careful and accurate clinical records.

7. To participate in clinical audit.

8. To participate in a non-resident 1st on-call rota, approximately 1 in 5 with prospective cover.

9. To maintain continuous professional development (CPD) and comply with appraisal and revalidation process as directed by the GMC.

10. The post holder is managerially responsible to the consultant but is accountable for their own clinical practice. The post holder will be expected to adhere to the policies and procedures of Northern Ireland Hospice.

Other Conditions

Registration and Medical Indemnity

Registration with the General Medical Council must be maintained. The post holder will also be required to produce evidence of current membership of a medical defence organisation

Annual Leave

30 days per annum (pro rata for part-time)

Training Opportunities

Opportunities exist to attend study days/courses relevant to palliative medicine.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

 Full registration with GMC.

 3 years post registration experience.

 An understanding of the ethical issues which arise in palliative care.

 Good interpersonal skills and ability to motivate staff and ensure good multidisciplinary teamwork.

 An ability to further the aims and ethos of Northern Ireland Hospice.

 A high level of professional and personal integrity.

 Good verbal and written communication skills.

 While on call must be approximately within a 30 minute travel time of the Hospice to meet this component of the role.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

 Higher medical qualification, e.g. MRCP, MRCGP or other relevant post graduate qualification e.g. Diploma in Palliative Medicine.

 Experience working in a Specialist Palliative Medicine In-Patient Unit.
