Credits and Thanks This presentation is an adaptation of “Technology to make Scientific Documents Accessible,” originally created by Masakazu Suzuki, Professor emeritus (Kyushu University) and Katsuhito Yamaguchi (Nihon University) in November, 2014 What are STEM Documents? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) documents may include any/all of the following: • Text • Math/chemical formulas • Tables • Diagrams • Flow charts • Figures and graphs Societal Barriers to Math Accessibility Some people believe: • Providing students with print disabilities access to math content is too difficult and time- consuming; • Most students with print disabilities find math too complex; and, • Because of these reasons, making math content accessible is not worth the time and effort.

1 Accessibility Issues: Math Images Often, images of mathematical equations appearing on web pages and in eBooks/PDF documents: • Are not accessible by students using AT; • Do not provide for alternative output modalities, such as Braille or synthetic speech; • Cannot be altered, easily, to accommodate the learning needs of students with low vision (color and contrast changes); and, • Require authors to redraw images when even small changes are made. Accessibility Issues: Alt-Text Tags • Are limited to a narrative description of math equations; • Must be hand-coded by someone who fully understands the context of the expression; • Do not provide ways to intelligently navigate though math equations in order to understand them; • Do not eliminate the previously mentioned issues like support for Braille math output; • Must contain unambiguously, consistent, descriptions of the math.; and, • Only provide a limited form of accessibility, and only for the simplest equations. Solution to Math Accessibility Problems Use LaTeX, MathML, and Word XML to render math content into formats that are accessible by students with print disabilities. What is InftyReader? InftyReader is an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) application that recognizes image- based STEM content automatically, and can then convert it into LaTeX, MathML, and/or Word XML. InftyReader Minimum Requirements • No Pixelation, 600DPI, B&W (Binary) Only • No Pixelation, 600DPI, B&W (Binary) Only Document Characteristics that do not Meet the Minimum Requirements • Pixelated, Grayscale Characters • Background Colors • Pixelated and/or Grayscale Characters • Dirty Background or Off-Horizontal • Characters Running Together • Broken Characters

2 • Background Patterns InftyReader Pricing • InftyReader One-Year Version: $90 • InftyReader Standard Version: $400 • InftyReader Enterprise Version: $5,000 • InftyReader/ChattyInfty Standard Version Bundle: $500 InftyReader Licensing: One Year Version The license for this version of InftyReader covers personal use only. This license does not permit using InftyReader to process documents, either for a charge or for free, for anyone other than the licensee. This license grants the right to install and use InftyReader on one (1) PC for the period of one year or 10,000 processed pages, whichever comes first. At that time the application will stop functioning and another license will need to be purchased. All the functions of the one year version of InftyReader are the same as the Standard Version. InftyReader Licensing: Standard Version InftyReader’s Standard version license is for personal use. It is also for use by colleges, schools (K-12), universities, and other educational institutions in support of creating accessible materials for students actively enrolled in the licensee’s institution. This license does not permit licensee to use InftyReader to process documents, either for a charge or for free, for use by any non-licensee organizations or non-licensee students or employees. This license grants the right to install and use InftyReader on one (1) PC for an unlimited amount of time and includes processing up to 10,000 pages per month. InftyReader Licensing: Enterprise Version The InftyReader Enterprise license is for business and/or professional use in support of recognizing large volumes of documents. There is no limit imposed on the number of pages per month. The license granted provides permission to deliver InftyReader network services to users on a physical campus or within one organization. This license version expressly limits the use of the Software to licensee’s fulltime employees who: 1) are physically located at, and work from within, licensee buildings; and, 2) are using Licensee-owned computers that are permanently connected to Licensee servers located within the Licensee’s corporate infrastructure. This license grants Licensee permission to integrate functionality of InftyReader into the licensee’s software and/or services that are being used for internal purposes only. Licensee is prohibited from integrating functionality of InftyReader into software and/or services that are being sold, rented, leased, or otherwise provided, in any manner, to any other individuals, entities, or organizations, under any circumstances. What is ChattyInfty 3? • ChattyInfty 3 is a talking math editor. It can be used to edit the files processed (OCR’d) by InftyReader. • Once editing is complete, ChattyInfty 3 can export files into a wide range of accessible formats.

3 ChattyInfty3 File Export Formats • LaTeX • HTML • MathML • Microsoft Word XML • Spoken Text • ChattyInfty 3: File Export Formats (2 of 2) • DAISY 2.02 multimedia • DAISY 2.02 audio • DAISY 3 multimedia • DAISY 3 text (with audio for math) • DAISY 3 text-only • EPUB3 media overlays • EPUB3 no audio • EPUB3 iBooks media overlays ChattyInfty Pricing • ChattyInfty One-Year Version: $40 • ChattyInfty Standard Version: $200 • InftyReader/ChattyInfty Standard Version Bundle: $500 What is InftyEditor? • InftyEditor is a free authoring tool for LaTeX-based mathematical documents. • Users can input any math expression quickly and easily using keyboard shortcuts. • Input math expressions are displayed, immediately, in print style just like you'd see in a printed document. More About InftyEditor InftyEditor can save files in the following formats: • LaTeX • MathML • HTML; and, • Microsoft Word XML
