When people think of “Leadership Development,” they generally think of programs that include Myers-Briggs assessments, advocacy and media training and issues management. Each of these elements of leadership development is vital – but in our minds, the need for a CME Leaders Institute is also clear. The need is driven by the multitude of changes in the Continuing Medical Education/Professional Development world: from ACCME Standards, industry guidelines, evidence based medicine to the need to develop CME leaders who are able to address these topics from the lectern, in the classroom, or in the State Capitol hallways.

Overall Goals

The overall goal of this initiative is to develop and implement a CME Leaders Institute that will ensure a pipeline of family medicine leaders who will be teacher/leaders – teaching high quality clinical and population-based medicine and using their leadership skills to advance the specialty in areas of policy and public health.

1CAFP’s CME Leaders Institute This project has the potential to set a precedent and example for other medical associations, including our national organization and its affiliated state chapters, in preparing family physicians to become teacher/leaders. This project is statewide, with a first class roster of up to 35 family physicians.

Project Description and Timeline

Each physician is a “teacher” and each teacher is a “leader” whether in the classroom, residency program, hospital rounds, CME session, or exam room with a patient, or in a state legislative hearing, board of directors meeting, television program, or organized medicine platform. Each teachable moment is an opportunity to provide the information that will ultimately improve leadership skills. Our Institute recognizes the expanded role of the “teacher/leader,” thus changing the traditional view of faculty.

The 12-month experience will move you along the scale of knowledge (the pre-work and workshop) to competence (workshop practice sessions) to performance (evaluation of two leadership or teaching experiences). Mentoring will assist you in identifying areas for skills improvement, and provide a support system as you begin their assignments.

Topics at the pilot workshop would include, but not be limited to:

. The CME players: ACCME, AAFP and AMA, IOM, and others . Adult learning principles . Slide, syllabus, and presentation skills . Ethics and Conflicts of Interest . Copyright laws . Evidence-based medicine and CME . Needs assessment, objective writing, learning outcomes . New learning formats, i.e., online learning journals, point-of-care education, etc. . The new rules of engagement in leading in education

Requirements

You will be required to complete pre-work that will include research on a clinical and/or health care policy topic, to be developed during the Institute; commit to one to two follow-up activities, with evaluation, during the 12 months following the Institute; and meet again at the end of 12 months to share your progress with the class.

You will also be mentored by a group of experienced CME leaders. The follow-up activities will give you experience in content preparation, audience engagement, and presentation skills. The CAFP will work with you to identify at least one of the two presentation opportunities.

CME Leaders Institute Co-Chairs and Faculty

Our co-chairs and mentors are a group of highly experienced education and leadership experts:

Carol S. Havens, MD, a board certified family physician and addiction medicine specialist, has responsibility for all continuing medical education for Northern California Permanente Medical Group physicians. She is currently CAFP’s President Elect, and was presented with the CAFP-F’s 2009 Award for Educational Excellence. She has been the Chair of the Committee on CME for the Institute for Medical Quality/California Medical Association.

2CAFP’s CME Leaders Institute Dr. Havens has also completed six-year tenure on the ACCME’s Accreditation Review Council, worked on the development of Kaiser’s internet and video CME program, presented hundreds of sessions on topics as varied as medical ethics and cardiovascular disease in women, physicians learning preferences and measuring outcomes of CME interventions, smoking cessation and pain management. She as recognized nationally as a leader in quality improvement and performance improvement and is a Fellow of the Alliance for CME and the winner of the 2007 ACCME Rutledge Howard MD Award for Individual Service to the Intrastate Accreditation System. Dr. Havens brings more than 20 years experience in teaching, innovation and leadership to the project. Drs. Havens was the CAFP Foundation’s Educator of the Year in 2010.

David Bazzo, MD is a graduate of Rosalind Franklin University of Health Sciences, the Chicago Medical School, and completed both his family medicine residency and sports medicine fellowships at UC San Diego. Dr. Bazzo is currently faculty at UCSD, teaching medical students and residents, and runs the PACE program. Dr. Bazzo is a past president of the San Diego chapter of CAFP, and chair of the CAFP’s Committee on Continuing Professional Development. Not only is he a frequent faculty member at CAFP and AAFP meetings, Dr. Bazzo has been selected by his peers as one of San Diego’s Physicians of Exceptional Excellence several years in a row, nominated in 2008 and 2009 for Kaiser Excellence in Teaching Award third year class, and “Volunteer of the Year” for the San Diego Performing Arts Council, Star Award. He has received grants from the National Institute of Health, Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) for his work as Co-Investigator. Dr. Bazzo has authored journal articles in Urgent Care about migraines, pre-sports participation examinations, and musculoskeletal topics among his myriad interests in primary care. Dr. Bazzo received the CAFP Foundation’s Educator of the Year Award in 2011.

Staff liaison for the Institute will be Shelly Rodrigues, CAE, CAFP Deputy Executive Vice President (DEVP) and CAFP-Foundation Executive Director. Ms. Rodrigues has a BS in education and MS in journalism, and is a graduate of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Breakthrough College on Collaboratives and Virtual Collaboratives and Certified Association Executives (CAE). She led the effort to secure ACCME accreditation for the California Academy of Family Physicians, and has achieved re-accreditation status three times. She is a nationally recognized expert on continuing medical education and a frequent speaker on the subject. She assisted in the development of the AAMSE Leadership Academy and continues to serve as faculty, including for the upcoming Academy for the Alliance for CME – melding CME and leadership. She served on the Commission on Continuing Professional Development of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the first non-CEO to do so among Academy chapter staff.

Drs. Martin Quan, Tom Bent, Christopher Flores, Geoffrey Leung, Lee Ralph, Michael Potter, William Woo, Ashley Christiani, Tipu Khan and others will also serve as faculty and mentors for this Institute.
