Course Summary

Course Location: Queens Park Leisure complex , Outdoor Education Team Office, Bught Drive, Inverness – Private car park Course Content: Common myths and misconceptions What activity does and could take place at water margins Exploring the real risks, planning considerations and sensible preventative actions when organising activity Sources of information and support What defines competence in terms of water margins Exploring the various water margins on our door step – practical session Basic rescue equipment and considerations when attempting to rescue someone (This will involve wading into water but not any swimming so please come prepared) What can we take away to increase the opportunities around water margins Complimentary training and professional development
This is not a lifesaving, rescue or qualification to deliver a specific water activity in its own right, but a course to compliment activities that take place at or near water margins. Such as beach activity, rock pooling, pond dipping, river studies and camping next to water sources.
Staff who wish to deliver and / or support technical water based activity such as gorge walking, coasteering, open water swimming should consider more specialist training and / or site specific training which HLH can advise and deliver on. Relevant / Useful Web Links:
Who is the course for: Course Category / Level: THC and HLH establishment visit leaders Training responsible for the management of off-site excursions involving or being near water. Facilitator: Min / Max Participants: HLH Outdoor Education Officer 6 / 12 Accreditation: Duration of Validity: HLH WMST is not currently nationally NA accredited. Progression: Renewal of Validity: Off Site Safety Management Individuals are encouraged to keep current (can be delivered by HLH), Beach Lifeguard, and attend relevant CPD Swift water rescue tech 1 Pre-Requisites: Course Preparation: Member of THC, HLH staff or third party Be aware of and familiar with Highland responsible for the management of off-site Excursions Guidance and ‘Going Out There’. excursions involving water margins . Course Duration / Hours: Venue / Requirements: 10am – 4.00pm Indoor and outdoor based course What I need to bring: Catering: Pen and notebook, clothing for going outside Tea and coffee. No lunch provided (local and into the water up to about knee deep facilities available) (change of clothes, towel and footwear) Accommodation: Parking: NA Local parking in private car park available Arrival / Departure: Course starts at 10.00 – please arrive by 9.45am Course Fee (THC & HLH Staff and Course Fee: registered volunteers): £45 Nil – for THC and HLH staff
