Course Description:
Seventh grade is the second year of a two year World Area Studies course. Seventh grade students study Africa and Asia. The goal of this two year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live. We will cover all topics which are required under the Georgia Performance Standards and the recently-implemented Common Core Standards for Literacy. We will use a variety of instructional and assessment tools both inside and outside the classroom. Students are expected to participate during discussions and instructional times because a large portion of their understanding of the course content will come from these activities. If a student remains attentive and respectful during the class, he or she will have no problem excelling in this course.
Required Materials: Composition book (remains in the class) Personal hand held pencil sharpener (that 3 ring binder with dividers catches shavings) Loose leaf notebook paper Pack of colored pencils Blue or black ink pens (2) 2 pocket folders (Assessments & Writing) #2 Pencils (mechanical preferred) Hi-lighter
Late Work & Make-Up Policy Should a student miss a class period, it is their responsibility to obtain assignments & notes when they return to school from the teacher blog and/or the teacher. It is important for each student to complete the assignments given and make appointments to make up any test or quizzes they missed.
Semester Grading Policy: 35% Assessments/Performance Tasks Exams and cumulative projects 35% Classwork Standards-based activities, peer group work, and writing assignments during class time. 25% Quizzes Formative assessments and progress checks 5% Homework Homework
Homework Policy: Research indicates that schools in which homework is routinely assigned and assessed tend to have higher achieving students. Homework fosters student achievement, independence, and responsibility and serves as a vital link between school and home. Therefore, we will assign homework that is meaningful and required. Students are required to ask questions to clarify homework assignments before leaving class; complete and submit homework assignments by the due date and complete all assignments honestly in accordance with the teacher’s directions.
Every assignment and due dates are to be recorded in the Student Planner. Students are expected to turn in all assignments on the date each is due (of course they can be turned in early). We expect all students to be responsible in finding out what assignments are due and completing all assignments if they are absent. We welcome all parents to visit teacher blogs to ensure their full understanding of when assignments are due and what is being taught in class. Textbook Information: Your student will be assigned a textbook to be kept at home by request only. Please take care to return your book in good condition at the end of the year. You will be charged for loss of damaged books. There are classroom sets of books for use on in-class assignments. Book: World Cultures and Geography – 7 th Replacement cost is $45.99
Tutoring Tutoring will be offered before school on Wednesdays at 8:15 and after school on Tuesdays until 5:00. To take advantage of this opportunity, please schedule with your teacher one day in advance.
Bring Your Own Device BYOD: Students will have the opportunity to use their devices in class per teacher discretion. In order to participate, students must turn in the BYOD permission slip that was placed in their County Welcome folder. Teachers have the right to monitor student used of devices. Students are not to use their devices otherwise: 1st offense is a warning and the second offense is an office referral.
Class Expectatio ns: Students are to come to class prepared and ready to engage in learning. At the start of each class period, students should have all necessary materials needed to complete their work. Our behavior management for our classroom is based on mutual respect among students and teachers which is supported by the Tapp Pride classroom management plan and our school’s PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies).
