ASSISTANT COACHES: Coach Smith & Coach McCabe

1.) PHYSICALS: Spring Track Physicals are due ASAP Please make sure your physical is up to date To get ALL the appropriate forms, go to the school website. Select ATHLETICS and then click on the link for Spring Sports Registration Even if you did a FALL/WINTER sport, you still must update your paperwork You MUST register on to Family ID, however, you are not completely cleared until Miss O (our school trainer) clears you

2.) IMPORTANT DATES:

 The season will begin on:

Monday, March 7, 2016

Practice begins at 2:30 pm promptly. We will meet outside on the track, weather permitting. Be prepared to stay till 4:30/5:00pm

3.) EXPECTATIONS Track is a Varsity sport in which all are expected to practice and compete to the best of their ability.

Because Track is a Varsity sport, athletes are expected to join for the purpose of competition in this sport and not solely for the purpose of pre-season training for another sport with the intention to attend practice and not compete. 4.) PRACTICE Practice is held daily from 2:30-4:30/5 pm

If you choose to have a job during the season, make sure you and your boss are aware of your practice & meet schedule. You should not be cutting out of a practice to go to work. It is suggested that you make your work schedule for AFTER 5:00 pm.

You are expected to complete your assigned warm-up routine in a timely fashion and report to the appropriate coach for your work-out.

You are expected to complete each workout to the best of your ability unless you are prohibited to do so. Examples include: a coach’s intervention, an injury, a time constraint, or poor weather conditions.

You are also expected to do a complete cool down when directed to do so.

You must maintain a serious, positive attitude towards practice. Plan to attend every day and work hard. If you have a problem on any given day, you must see your coach directly. No messages will be accepted.

Practicing is the hardest thing that you will do. The meets are easy!

We practice every day, RAIN, SLEET, SNOW, or SHINE! Be sure to dress accordingly & bring warm clothes to put on after workouts. In the event of poor weather conditions, an announcement will be made at the end of the school day and will instruct you further.

If you do not come to practice dressed appropriately for the weather, you will be sent inside and will receive an unexcused absence for not being prepared.

If you get hurt during practice, seek help immediately! Contact one of the coaches and we will assist you further. Do not go to the trainer without telling a coach or a teammate!

You are expected to train on the weekends when we do not have formal practice. Coaches will give you appropriate workouts.

5.) Attendance

You are expected to attend practice daily. A record will be kept.

A note must be provided to the coach if you are unable to attend.

Excused absences include: extra help (when it is not available at another time), field trips, college visits, an illness or some extenuating circumstance, provided with a doctor’s/parent’s note, or an observed holiday. Tutoring or being tutored is not an exception. You need to arrange a time for this after practice.

Attendance will be taken AFTER you complete your workout or during warm-ups by a Coach. No one is permitted to check you in. You MUST check yourself in.

The attendance policy will be strictly enforced. If you miss a total of three practices and they are unexcused, you will be dismissed from the team. There will be no exceptions! Your name will be removed from the roster. This includes not being cleared from the trainer once the season starts!

You are expected to attend all meets if selected to do so. Club Sports and jobs should not conflict. Missing meets that you have been entered in on a regular basis may result in dismissal from the team. You are expected to attend ALL HOME MEETS, even if you are not on the roster

You are expected to stay for the entire duration of a duel/tri meet. (HOME or AWAY) You may get picked up from Invitational Meet, so long as you are not an alternate for anything else on the roster

If you were placed on a roster (for any meet) and cannot attend OR if you skip a home meet even if you’re not on the roster, you will sit out the next meet. If you miss two meets in a row and were selected to compete, then you miss the next two following meets…and so on.

If you are absent from school, you are not permitted to practice or participate in a competition unless given permission by the coach (such an allowance would be when making a college visit)

You are not permitted to compete if you are not at practice the day before

If you are selected to compete at the Sectionals/State level, and are unable to, this may result in a loss of your Varsity Letter

6.) Varsity Letter Requirements:

Must be able to compete in offered meets

Must adhere to attendance policy (3 unexcused absences may result in dismissal from the team)

Must adhere to rules for practice and competition

Must exhibit good sportsmanship & commitment to the team

Must make an impact at the Varsity level

Final decisions are determined by coaching staff- A list of standards will be implemented this year and will be used to help with the decision process

7.) Equipment

Shoes: It is recommended that you get a new pair of running shoes for each season (injury prevention). If you are unfamiliar with what type of shoe to get, ask a coach for advice. If you plan on getting racing flats/spikes for competition, see Coach Kelly. ¼” spikes are used in running and jumping events.

8.) Meets You are expected to be on time when departing for a meet.

If you miss the bus, you are not permitted to be driven to a meet and participate.

“To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is to be forgotten.” -BK, SHS X-C You are expected to “represent” your school while at a meet. You should wear only SHS track gear. You should not be doing any advertising for a college or for any other school sport while at a meet. If anything, wear your school colors! Dress to impress.

Have some Pioneer Pride! DO NOT wear jeans (etc.) to a competition! You are there to compete, not to be a spectator, so look like it!

If you need to see a trainer prior to leaving for a meet, please give Coach Kelly advanced notice.

You may not drive to an event on your own. You are to arrive with your team.

You are not permitted to leave a meet unless you have a note from your parent and it is approved by both the coach and athletic director in advance. *Please adhere to the staying for the entire meet policy for duel/tri meets.

You are expected to be on your best behavior. Remember you represent yourself, your community, your team, your school, your parents, and your coaches.

Never leave the meet site to warm up. Always warm up in groups, never alone.

Make sure you are prepared for your event and that you are checked in.

Make sure you bring the necessary equipment to compete. It is not the coaches’ responsibility to carry extra spare spikes, throwing equipment, blocks, etc.
