WHO MAY SHOW: Current bonafide 4-H or FFA members enrolled in a Jackson County 4-H or FFA organization.
EXHIBITORS: Must comply with rules and regulations of the Association as listed in this book.
LIABILITY FOR LOSS: The Jackson County Cattlemen’s Association, Jackson County Extension Service, Jackson County Board of Commissioners, Jackson County School Board, and Jackson County Agriculture Center will not be responsible for injury, loss, or theft of property.
GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
Any questions or protests concerning compliance with the rules and regulations or the eligibility of an exhibitor or his/her animal must be submitted in writing within 24 hours of show weigh-in to the show chairman.
1. ELIGIBILITY: Exhibitors must be current bonafide 4-H or FFA members enrolled in a Jackson County 4-H or FFA organization.
1.1 Anyone having graduated from or currently dropped out of school shall be ineligible to enter Show and Sale.
1.2 All youth are encouraged to exhibit their cattle in the Panhandle Youth Expo. Cattle must be halter broken, paraded, and shown without endangering other Exhibitors. Steers that are unmanageable will be eliminated from participation in the Show and Sale.
1.3 If an Exhibitor has a physical condition that may hinder their ability to
maintain control of the show animal, the exhibitor must notify show management for approval prior to the show.
1.4 Students must complete and submit the proper entry form no later than October 12, 2017
2. RECORD BOOKS : All Steer exhibitors must submit their completed record books on their steer projects by the 2nd Tuesday following the show. Record book outlines will be provided by the exhibitors FFA Advisor or 4-H Agent. Failure to comply with this rule will result in forfeiting premiums. 3. Ownership and Possession: The exhibitor must maintain continuous ownership and have possession and provide daily care for the animal(s) from the date of the initial weigh-in until the time of sale after the show.
4. ENTRIES: All entry forms for steers are due on or before October 13, 2016. All entries must be submitted for the initial weigh-in on at the Panhandle Youth Expo in order to compete in the weight gain contest; final weigh-in will be on February 19, 2018. Registered animals must be identifiable by the markings set forth on the animal’s registration papers.
5. SIGNATURES: Student’s entry forms must be signed by the participant’s Agricultural Education Teacher or County Extension Agent and by a parent or guardian. Otherwise, they will not be accepted.
6. SHOWMANSHIP: A showmanship contest will be conducted. There will be a Junior (8 - 10), Intermediate (11 – 13), and Senior (14 - 18) division Showmanship contest. This event will be held immediately prior the steer show. Only exhibitors may compete for showmanship – No substitutes.
7. SUBSTITUTE SHOWMEN: Subject to Show Committee approval based on individual situations.
8. GROOMING: False tail heads and false switches will not be permitted. All cattle must be shown in their natural conformation and structure without alteration by modification except for the grooming and treatment of the hair and trimming of the hooves. NO GRAPHITE MAY BE APPLIED!
9. TAMPERING: Tampering with any animal entered, such as filling with water and/or foreign substance, etc., is prohibited. The use of tranquilizers on show animals or the possession of same after arrival at the show will be construed as a form of tampering.
10. PENALTY: A $25.00 deduction will be made from the sale price of any animal left unattended (fed, watered, clean bedding) during show from the time of arrival until cattle are removed.
11. PROJECT SPONSOR MONEY: Exhibitors may solicit for sponsor money to assist with expenses directly associated with their project steer(s). To ensure that all project sponsors will be properly recognized, the Extension Office must receive all completed sponsor forms before 4:30 PM, on the Friday immediately preceding the final check-in. Exhibitors will receive their sponsor money, in full, along with premiums, add-ons and sale proceeds at the Fed Cattle Show Awards Supper. 12. SALE: The sale of cattle will take place at 7:00 PM, February 20, 2018. All Market Steers exhibited, that meet the weight requirement, will be sold to the highest bidder. Exhibitors will be responsible for securing their own sponsors and buyers who will bid at this time. Exhibitors will be responsible for contacting, by letter, at least four potential buyers to attend the auction. A “Letter of Thanks” must then be sent to the buyers and sponsors. A copy of each of the four Buyer letters as well as the letter of thanks to the buyer must be included in the record book. All steers will be shrunk 3% from weight at final weigh-in to determine sale weight for auction. All sponsor money will be returned to the youth in full.
13. CONDUCT: Neither exhibitors, nor anyone associated with exhibitor, shall make controversial or derogatory comments, in any manner, to the weigh officials or judge. To do so may jeopardize exhibitor’s future eligibility to show. Any such comments may be directed to Show Chairman or designee. Unbecoming conduct on the part of an exhibitor or anyone associated with the exhibitor will, at the discretion of the Management, result in disqualification of the exhibitor and require immediate removal of the steer and the exhibitor from the fairgrounds with loss of premiums, awards, show privilege, and sale privilege.
14. Final interpretation and administration of these rules will be vested in Show Management, and their decision will be final. Any evidence of fraud coming to the attention of Show Management will be prosecuted to the limit of the law (i.e. falsifying records of ownership or origin).
15. STEER SHOW RULES: Steers should be in the ownership and possession of exhibitor by October 12, 2017. The steer must be fed and cared for BY THE EXHIBITOR. In cases where this cannot be done on the home place of the exhibitor, written permission to house and to care for the steer elsewhere must be obtained from the Show Management prior to the entry deadline. A physical inspection may be made at the discretion of Show Management to ensure compliance with rules and regulations. Steers should be tattooed or have a Federal I.D. Tag attached before or at entry time. Each tattoo must be legible and comprised of At least two digits prior to check in time.
First weigh-in: Steers are required to be checked in and weighed Thursday, October 12, 2017, from *** 8:00 am – 10:00 am. Weigh-in is to be held at the Jackson County Fairgrounds; at this time steers must be tattooed. No minimum weight is required; however, a weight range of 700-800 pounds at the Weigh-in on October 12, 2017 is recommended.
Final weigh-in: Steers entered in the Fed Cattle Show will check in on Monday, February 19, 2018 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.
All steers must be dehorned. This means a smooth head.
Steers will be divided into equal classes by weight. Animals will be judged according to the Modified Danish System and premiums awarded as listed.
Weight requirements to sell Steers must weigh at least 900 pounds to be eligible for the Sale. All entries will be eligible to show, but the minimum weight requirement must be met to sell.
BEST JACKSON COUNTY STEER
An additional class will be judged immediately following the selection of the Reserve Champion. Qualifying steers must have been born and raised in Jackson County to participate in this class. Proof of origin must be presented at the initial weigh-in on October 12, 2017. This may be in the form of a letter from the breeder of the calf. Prizes: Farm of Breeder of Best Jackson County Raised Steer receives a plaque.
GAIN-IN-WEIGHT CONTEST Sponsored by: JACKSON COUNTY FARM BUREAU
General Rules and Regulations
The purpose of this contest is to test the exhibitor’s ability as a cattle feeder and his ability in the selection of an animal to make economic gains.
Any bonafide 4-H or FFA steer entry in the Jackson County Cattlemen’s Association Fed Cattle Show and Sale will be eligible to compete in the contest.
As far as this contest is concerned, the feeding period will begin at the initial weigh-in on October 12, 2017 and end at final weigh in February 19, 2018. Only steers weighed in on October 12, 2017 will be eligible to compete for the “Gain-in Weight” contest.
The show classification weight as you arrive at the show will be used as the end of the feeding period weight.
The top 5 steers with the highest weight gain from the official beginning Weigh-in to the Fed Cattle Show Weigh-in will receive cash awards sponsored by the Jackson County Farm Bureau. The amount of the 2016 awards will be determined by the Jackson County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. 2015 cash awards were as follows:
1ST Place - $80 2nd Place - $65 3rd Place - $50 4th Place – $35 5th Place - $20
BEEF CARCASS CONTEST
Beef carcasses will be evaluated on a combination of quality and yield grade. Individual prizes will be awarded to the exhibitors of the steers that yielded top quality beef. Grand Champion Carcass will receive $100.00 and a plaque. Reserve Champion Carcass will receive $50.00 and a plaque.
BEEF CATTLE SCHOLARSHIP 4-H or FFA - $500.00
Open to 12th grade 4-H and FFA members who have exhibited steers and/or heifers in the Jackson County Cattlemen’s Fed Cattle Show. Students must file an application with the secretary of the Jackson County Cattlemen's Association by February 2, 2018. A $500.00 check will be awarded to the recipient when he/she provides proof of enrollment and a copy of tuition payment at a post-secondary institution of his/her choice.
WILLIAM H. NEEL MEMORIAL AWARD
The William H. Neel Memorial Award is presented to a 4-H or FFA member 14 years of age or older who has shown steers in the Jackson County Cattlemen’s Fed Cattle Show. The award winner will have his/her name engraved on a permanent plaque housed in the Jackson County Extension Office and will receive $200. Entries must be submitted to the Jackson County Extension Office by February 2, 2018. 4-H or FFA record books may accompany the entry. Selection criteria will be based on: 1. Beef and non-beef projects 2. Extra-curricular activities (school, church, etc.) 3. Volunteer and community service 4. Scholastic achievement 5. Spirit of cooperation and sportsmanship
RECORD BOOK CONTEST
It is mandatory that all 4-H & FFA exhibitors submit a completed record book on their steer projects. Any exhibitor failing to submit a record book will forfeit his/her premium money. A plaque and $25.00 will be awarded to the exhibitors entering the best record book in the junior, intermediate and senior divisions.

FFA AND 4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTESTS
Open to FFA and 4-H teams in Jackson and neighboring counties under the supervision of their chapter advisor or extension agent. In addition to placing the classes of animals, students may answer a set of 5 questions on 2 of the classes (worth 50 points per set). Questions will be posted near the class.
FFA and 4-H will judge the same animals, but will not compete against each other. Eligibility of individual members will be left entirely to the chapter advisor or 4-H Agent. There will be separate 4-H junior, intermediate and senior divisions for teams and individuals. FFA will have a Junior Chapter Division and a Senior Chapter Division.
Registration for judging teams will be from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM the day of the Contest. County agents and Agricultural Education Teachers will be responsible for seeing that their teams are properly registered.

Judging will begin at or before 9:30 AM the day of the Contest. Ten minutes will be allowed to judge each class and two minutes to rotate from class to class.
JUDGING CONTEST PREMIUMS A plaque or trophy will be awarded to highest scoring 4-H and FFA teams and high individuals.
