INVITATION TO CONFERENCE “POLITICAL REPRESSIONS IN THE 1940IES AND 1950IES”
On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia the Estonian Heritage Society has the honour of inviting you to attend an international conference “Political Repressions in the 1940ies and 1950ies”, to be held on 21 August in the Estonian National Library at Tõnismägi 2, Tallinn. The conference draws attention to Europe’s recent history during and after the World War II and commemorates the memory of victims of the 20 th century terrorist regimes. Conference speakers will discuss post-war crimes towards the civil society and present cases from Latvia, Hungary, Poland and Estonia.
The Estonian Heritage Society will also introduce a new public data-base on significant people from Estonia who were active in the social and cultural life and died outside Estonia. The data-base will offer information on the location of their burial sites outside Estonia. The data-base is compiled in co-operation with the Estonian Heritage Society, the Estonian Union of Archivists, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education and Research, Ministry of Defense, the National Heritage Board and the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
On 22 August a memorial plaque will be opened on the former prison camp ITL-1 in Narva that during 1945 – 1955 detained political prisoners and even children from Estonia, the Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Romania, Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania. Approximately 1000 of them died from diseases and hunger and are buried in nameless graves at the Siivertsi cemetery in Narva. A bus will depart on 22 August at 8.30 from the National Library. People wishing to attend the opening in Narva are asked to transfer 100 kroons to the EHS bank account 10022002686005 SEB Eesti Ühispank, indicating your name by 11 August at the latest. The fee will cover transport to and from Narva and refreshments.
We kindly ask you to attend the conference on 21 August in Tallinn and the opening of the memorial plaque on 22 August in Narva to commemorate the citizens that suffered and died due to political repressions during the 1940ies and the 1950ies. Please find the programme enclosed.
