JOB TITLE: Teacher of Science DATE PREPARED: March 2017

PURPOSE:

To provide an efficient and effective Science Department by  Having responsibility for delivering good quality Science lessons.  Assisting in establishing and maintaining general organisation and order of the school and implementing agreed curricular and pastoral policies.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1 Carry out the professional duties of a main grade teacher as detailed in the Teachers Pay and Conditions Act 1999. 2 Plan and prepare lessons in the agreed department format. 3 Set and mark work within the agreed department and school policy. 4 Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils in the agreed department and school policy. 5 Participate in any arrangements within an agreed national framework for the appraisal and performance of teachers. 6 Participate in reviews of his/her teaching and the subsequent training to enable professional development. 7 Co-operate with the Head Teacher and Assistant Head Teacher on the development of methods of teaching and pastoral arrangements. 8 Assist in establishing and maintaining general organisation and order of the school 9 Participate in meetings in the school which relate to the efficient management of the school or the objective of raising standards within the department and school. 10 Undertake all necessary work to enable pupils to enter public examinations. 11 Manage and supervise any support staff allocated to work in the classroom. 12 Perform the role of a form tutor. 13 Have a high regard for Health and Safety of pupils. 14 To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young person’s in accordance with Safeguarding Children in Education under the provisions of the Education Act 2002 section 175. GENERAL:

1. The above principal accountabilities are not exhaustive and may vary without changing the character of the job or level of responsibility.

2. The above duties may involve having access to information of a confidential nature, which may be covered by the Data Protection Act. Confidentiality must be maintained at all times.

3. The postholder must be flexible to ensure the operational needs of the Council are met. This includes the undertaking of duties of a similar nature and responsibility as and when required, throughout the various work places in the Council.

5. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act (1974) and other associated legislation places responsibilities for Health and Safety on all employees. Therefore, it is the postholder’s responsibility to take reasonable care for the Health, Safety and Welfare of him/herself and other employees in accordance with legislation and the Council’s Safety Policy and Programme. Specific details are outlined in the Departmental Safety Policy.

6. Where the postholder is disabled, every effort will be made to supply all the necessary employment aids, equipment or adaptations to enable him/her to perform the full duties of the job. If, however, a certain task proves to be unachievable then job redesign will be given full consideration.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/MENTAL SKILLS: Only include the essential requirements to undertake the principal accountabilities

1. Qualifications – Requirement: Qualified Teacher Status. Degree in a Related subject.

2. Knowledge – Requirement: Awareness of National Strategies. Excellent teaching skills. Ability to create a climate for learning within the classroom. Good organisational skills. Familiarity with attainment data and target setting. Willingness to learn and develop professionally. Familiarity with a range of ICT programs.

3. Experience – Requirement: Excellent classroom practice. Teaching across the full ability and 11-16 age range in a comprehensive school.

4. Specific Skills – Requirement: Interest/skills in the use of ICT. Passionate about teaching Science. Innovative approaches to classroom teaching. Good relationships with students. Ability to motivate girls of all abilities. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
