GTANSW PLANNING MEETING 2016

Held at Novotel Sydney Olympic Park October 26th 2016

Bernadette Motulalo outlines the roles and service s provided by PTC staff with specific reference to GTA NSW

Grant Kleeman: Discusses financial auditors report. Does think that PTC is good value for money but would like to see a more detailed report of what each event is costing. Grant believes that we need to be better at budgeting for events and suggested putting together a proforma. This will enable GTA to provide what the projected numbers will be, costings and provide a more accurate price for participants. Grant made mentioned factoring in PTC support for events. Bernadette is to provide an overview of costings to PTC. Grant has also put together a proforma for any expenses needed to be reimbursed. Important to attached receipts of all expenses.

Approximately $30,000 of existing funds are to go to AGTA for Geo Skills Unlocked. He has sent out almost 250 copies. Anticipates the next month will see class sets being sent out. Am sending it out himself but will see how this goes. GTA will profit $10 from each book sale. After 6000 copies are sold, profit looks to increase by $20 per book. Currently have 1500 copies at PTC offices.

Increasing membership prices would not be advisable as profit currently is good.

Other matters related to finance

Nick: Employ a primary school teacher to write up articles for bulletin and make them a liaison. Lorraine agreed that this was a good idea GRANT: Will discuss bulletin at later stage but agreed that this was also a good idea.

John Lewis: Discussed changing the process of signatories as there were 5 and that this needed to be amended as it has become more digital. Grant stated that there are no longer 5 signatories. Online banking with Westpac. 3 people currently have access: Mai Mai, Nick and Grant. But previously was at a time when GTA issues cheques.

Nick: has stated that he is a backup signatory but rarely signs for this due to online banking, only requires one. Stated that who - ever is signatories should be noted in AGM minutes John Lewis: suggested a review of the constitution but will discuss this at a later stage. Grant suggested reviewing constitution during an extraordinary meeting Lorraine stated that this will need to be reviewed due to legislative changes SUSAN: Finance section closed

SUSAN: Would like look at strategic intent and vision for what GTA as a council would like to see happen in our association, what we want to stand for and things that we’d like to see.

Susan scribes and capture brainstorm from council.

2017 VISION AND FUTURE DIRECT:

 Continue with events we have done in 2016  Introduce primary focused events  Forward thinking in how we delivery PDS but also how we support and delivery contemporary curriculum; online, webinar, twilight conferences.  Actively promoting the subject  Alignment with AGTA  Alignment of professional standards and making teachers knowledgeable of how their classroom practices can relate to standard.  Website: more of a social media presence.  A good number of teachers do use the website as opposed to social media  Distribution of resources and getting this to teachers  Password protected resources VS Freely available articles. How much of this information is going past the head teachers.  Development of an online strategy; having a Facebook account, links to articles, also working with community of schools – reach out.  Review of other associations – adopt and adapt.  Collecting non-member contact lists from registrations of PDs  Record and reuse fieldwork and webinars.

BREAK – Morning tea

SHARON: Sharon goes through professional learning survey responses to inform GTA Planning. Provides overview of demographics of online survey that was produced. Talks about areas that were popular, sectors and also levels.

 Most common respondent was classroom teacher  Demographically, according to postcodes, the responses were mostly in the metropolitan area but also had responses rurally in Central Coast, Newcastle, Byron etc.…  Convenient regional locations with majority in Bateman’s Bay. Council suggested that it may be the location and also utilizing the time of Friday leading into the weekend.  Mostly secondary schools but also honing into K-12 responses and targeting primary audience.

 Delivery method responses shows that workshops dominate. When it comes to syllabus content and syllabus content, online methods do are preferred but when going into fieldwork, respondents prefer workshops. Could possibly due to outdated text books, a need to be in an environment to gain ideas and advice.  Fieldwork was also popular as workshops rather than told of how to do something, they wanted to do it, they wanted to actually do it.

 Times when to put on PDs, responses suggested that it is either 1st term or 4th term for the best time to organize PDs.  People do not mind doing holiday or Saturday PDs  Also found that 2 day conferences were popular, possibly due to participant’s ability to attend either day or to choose workshops and fieldwork.  Twilight conferences work well for teachers who cannot get relief and also it was cost effective.

 Sharon made note of comments on the survey. Relating to notice of upcoming PDs, Making regional PDs more wide spread and special note of regional conferences allowing teachers to attend a PD outside of Sydney as adding to the experience.  Mention of a TAFE person who has talked about funding being taken away. Council to source member and reach out to offer their support.  Nick suggests publishing some of this data to show members. As part of editorial or on website.  Could also be beneficial to show members, we are taking in their feedback Susan moves on and council discusses, elaborating, based on feedback:  What will we do?  What will it look like?  What could we do?  What will it look like What will we What will it look like? Points discuss at length.  CONFERENCE: Lorraine talked about having 2 day Conference with keynote.  Talked about costs. Difference between $12,000 between Novotel and Rydges. o Rydges: approximately: $3.000 inclusive of quote o Novotel: $6,000 on top of quotes price. o Council agreed that Lorraine contact Novotel to discuss their costs due to ongoing relationship. o Things to consider besides price are location, accessibility and use of many breakout rooms.  Incorporate awards and HSC review as per last year.  Very few attended JUST the HSC review.  To review GTA Presenter costs as they significantly vary. GTA to look into what their parameters will be.  Will discuss at a later stage whether they would have fieldwork or something to with hands on.  Nick suggested, for Primary school workshops, Malcolm McInerney videos that could possibly be used and discussed among Primary school teachers.  ARTHUR PHILIP ENTRIES: Grace has stated that awards together with the Conference was received positively.  She stated that the audience was authentic and genuine. She would like to continue this.  Council agreed this this would continue. Also raised profile of the awards as some participants to the conference did not know that this existed. Advice around passing awards on to school leavers and around teachers of students.  Nick suggested showcasing the awards ceremony by advertising this at conferences, digitally and also in programme but also for workshops.  Trophy is also well received.  Ask Geog Soc to present an award

HSC AWARDS  Was also received well. Will continue to merge this also with the conference.  Contact them earlier before the years end to let them know because sometimes they go overseas or to university or work.  Nick suggested that universities students were also involved in some way. Suggested looking at reviving this opportunity to sell Geography at university level.  Susan added that there could also be a workshop at the conference for tertiary students of geography.  Trophy is also well received.  Could ask Geog Soc to present an award

HSC REVIEW  To put together with conference again. A lot of regional members were able to attend because they were coming for the conference as well.  Suggestions to go digital if they could not come to conference. To hold a few weeks after the review.
