Sheridan recognizes that some students who enter a program at the College will have earned postsecondary credits at other recognized postsecondary institutions and may wish to apply these credits towards the Sheridan credential. Advanced standing refers to the transferring of credit earned at another recognized post- secondary institution towards a Sheridan credential.

Students may apply to receive advanced standing for specific Sheridan course(s) based on the successful completion of similar courses at other recognized postsecondary institutions subject to meeting applicable Sheridan policies. Mature Student Status – Mature students do not possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent, and are 19 years of age or older before the starting date of the program.

Mature students who apply to Sheridan’s certificate and diploma programs must demonstrate their ability to work at the postsecondary level in one of the following ways:

 *Applicants who are unable to complete a visual arts credit or who achieved less than 65% in their visual arts credit will be required to submit a portfolio. A portfolio assessment fee will be charged.  By successfully completing equivalency testing in English and/or mathematics and/or; science or  By completing a program of academic upgrading at a level appropriate to the program of choice.*

Mature students must demonstrate proficiency in meeting specific program prerequisites.

*If you do not have the required English, you may wish to enroll in Sheridan’s Academic Upgrading program to obtain equivalent credit. Sheridan also offers an ESL program. Preparatory training, such as academic upgrading, is eligible for Second Career funding, subject to the approval of Employment Ontario.

Eligible applicants are selected on the assessment of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses), and the results of their portfolio assessment, if required.

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.

This is a full time program over 2 years: (4 semesters of 14 weeks each) Hours per week: 18 (daytime hours between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday)

Programs starting in September have a four month break over the summer (from approximately mid-April to end of August) between first and second year. The Christmas break is approximately 3 weeks, and breaks between semesters are 2 Program Length/ weeks. The Interior Decorating diploma program covers a full range of professional skills. You’ll learn to:

 Plan and design residential and small commercial environments, from programming to final presentation drawings  Draft using professional standards to visually communicate details and design concepts  Freehand draw, sketch and apply mixed media to presentations  Design and implement marketing and sales strategies  Prepare portfolio and decorating presentations  Utilize effective verbal and graphic communication skills  Enhance visual presentations using industry software such as 2020 Kitchen and Bath, Sketchup, and AutoCAD

You’ll enter the work force with a developed interior decorating sensibility, plus the business acumen to compete for clients and run an efficient, profitable business.

Additional Benefits

The program includes a three-week work placement at the end of the second year, as well as periodic field trips to local design shows and product showrooms. You’ll even have the opportunity to take trips to such destinations as Italy, New York, Prague, Mexico, Spain and Paris.

In addition, Sheridan is the only interior decorating program in Canada to teach via mobile computing. Using your own laptop, you’ll work collaboratively with faculty and classmates while enjoying 24/7 access to coursework, lecture notes, assignments, presentations, and other resources. Alumni of Sheridan can access all in-person and web-site Career Centre’s services for assistance in Career Counselling and Employment Advising for one year after their graduation date. After one year, they can access all web-site services including jobs.sheridan (our on-line job posting system).

Code: DESN COURSE Anthropometrics and Ergonomics Hours / wk: 3 13314 In this course students learn how interior decorators incorporate basic data about human body measurements (anthropometrics) and the study of people and their relationship with the environment around them (ergonomics) into decorating solutions. Specifically, students will explore the principles and practices of anthropometrics and ergonomics and apply them to different decorating applications including the design of basic furniture and interior spaces. Furthermore, students will examine the impact of human diversity (gender, age, ethnicity, and disability) on decorating solutions. Students will apply their knowledge of anthropometrics and ergonomics through in-class exercises and practical assignments.

In this course students learn a practical approach to basic conventions and techniques in

The ability to communicate ideas and concepts through architectural drawings is emphasized and reinforced through practical applications in the drafting studio. Areas of study include drafting equipment, architectural lettering, mathematics, conventional projection principles and methods of indicating sections. Students are introduced to the drafting of residential spaces and produce residential plans and elevations.

COURSE Drawing Techniques Code: DESN 10016 Hours / wk: 3

In this course students are introduced to the basic drawing skills appropriate to interior decorating practice. Emphasis is placed on the use of freehand analytical drawing, freehand concept sketching (including thumbnail sketching) and a fundamental understanding of paraline drawings. Students are exposed to a variety of media and tonal techniques, including sketching pencils, black felt tip pen and grey markers. Subject matter surveyed ranges from simple three- dimensional objects to furniture, accessories as well as interior spaces.

The elements and principles of design are the foundation of all forms of visual and functional arts. Students begin by examining the theoretical basis of the principles and elements of design and apply those theories to practical applications. By exploring the "under structure" of what is commonly referred to as "good design", it enables students to set up criteria with which to evaluate design projects.

In this course students are introduced to fundamental colour theory and how colour is used to influence individual response to physical space. Students study the historical and cultural context of colour theory. Learning is reinforced through practical applications that build their awareness of spatial, psychological and practical aspects of colour application in interior space.

Code: COMM COURSE Essential Communication Skills Hours / wk: 3 19999 Essential Communication Skills is an introduction to college-level English that develops transferable communication skills required by students for both academic and professional success: writing, reading, speaking, presenting, listening and visual literacy. Students become familiar with various writing styles, and course work provides opportunities for students to read, analyze and practice a variety of structures and formats. Students develop critical reading and response strategies, create well-reasoned reports, edit their own work, perform the fundamentals of academic research and give effective oral presentations. Course work includes a variety of learning experiences including lectures, lab work and collaboration.

Program Profile for Second Career September 2013 start Interior Environments - Space Planning Code: DESN COURSE Hours / wk: 3 Basics 10000 Effective space planning is an essential basis for every decision in interior decorating. It sets the stage for every successful interiors project. In this course, students will apply the concepts learned in Anthropometrics and Ergonomics to create effective use of space and to arrange furniture for residential spaces. Through in-class exercises and assignments, students will apply these theories to design interiors that work functionally and please aesthetically.

COURSE Drafting - Residential Spaces Code: DESN 10123 Hours / wk: 3

In this course students learn systems drafting techniques commonly used in architectural drawings. Lectures will include architectural working drawings, standard architectural symbols and abbreviations, materials representation, as well as, plans, elevations, sections, millwork and cabinetry drawings. Students will apply their knowledge through the practice of exercises and the execution of design and working assignments, elevating their skills to an intermediate level.

COURSE Finishes and Sustainable Issues Code: DESN 12758 Hours / wk: 3

In this course students are introduced to the variety of finishes and materials applied to wall, floor and ceiling surfaces in residential and commercial interiors. In exploring each of the finishes, students take the client profile, application considerations and issues of sustainability into account. Finishes are examined in terms of their associations with each other and the surfaces to which they are applied. Students use research skills to familiarize them with sourcing, properties and applications of a variety of materials. In-class activities provide opportunities to develop decor solutions and product estimating. Field trips and guest speakers from the trades provide awareness as to the relationship between the decorator and industry.

COURSE Visual Concepts and Principles Code: DESN 10049 Hours / wk: 3

Interior Decorating is the process of creating interiors for three-dimensional spaces we live and work in. In this course, students will apply the principles and elements of design to explore the organization of objects in space. Students will use a variety of materials and media, integrating conceptual sketching and problem solving skills to explore three-dimensional form/space relationships. Assignments and in-class exercises will focus on objects and forms as well as space and interiors.

COURSE Textiles and Applications Code: DESN 10199 Hours / wk: 3

Textiles are utilized in all residential and commercial projects in the form of upholstery, drapery, bedding and soft furnishings. The study of textiles can be broken down into three components: identification, sourcing and application. Under the component of identification, students examine the categorization of textiles by fibre, weave, yarn, dyeing and printing. Under the component of

Finally, under the component of application, students explore issues around specifications, testing and sustainability. Students develop a variety of creative, hands-on projects in order to hone their skills in the selection of textiles that meet the visual and performance requirements of the interior space.

COURSE History of the Decorative Arts Code: HIST 15288 Hours / wk: 3

This course provides students with a basic overview of the development of the decorative arts in Europe, England, and North America from the emergence of court styles in the late 17th century through the Victorian Era, Arts and Crafts movement, Art Deco, and the Bauhaus. Areas of study include architecture, furniture, ceramics, textiles and metalwork. Through projects, tests and in- class assignments, students learn about stylistic and technical developments, as well as social and historical forces that have affected the design of objects and interiors.

In this course, students apply the fundamental skills needed to plan interior spaces for all types of homes and in varying decorative styles. Through in-class exercises and assignments, students apply these key design concepts to create a well designed home.

COURSE CAD for Decorators - Introduction Code: INFO 24579 Hours / wk: 3

Computer Aided Design (CAD) allows interior decorating professionals to create electronic drawings which respond to industry needs. In this course students learn the fundamentals of computer aided design. Students setup Auto CAD 2D drawings, while applying design and drafting concepts. They initiate 2D draw and modify commands and produce scaled hard copy and file outputs. Through assignments and tests, students develop skills creating effective Auto CAD drawing files. They apply basic materials, notes and dimensions to their drawings as well as create a primary Auto CAD fixture and symbol library.

In this course, students build on the fundamental technical drawing and communication skills introduced in Semesters 1 and 2. Mechanical perspective drawing skills are developed in order to clarify and enhance interior decoration concepts in terms of architectural detail, lighting solutions and furnishing selection. Texture and material rendition skills are explored utilizing a variety of media and techniques in order to convey client character and function within residential interiors. Students explore these concepts through instructor demonstrations, interactive lectures, in-class exercises and assignments. Participants complete the perspective and rendering component for the final project of the Interiors course in this class.

COURSE Lighting Code: DESN 20025 Hours / wk: 3

Lighting is an integral part of all design projects. In this course, students develop a fundamental knowledge of the principles of lighting. They explore light as a design element, lighting technology and the environmental issues related to lighting. Through projects, tests, and field trips, students develop skills to create effective lighting designs and create comfortable environments that encourage the well-being of others.

Window Treatments and Soft COURSE Code: DESN 27370 Hours / wk: 3 Furnishings In this course students apply their knowledge of window treatments in order to recommend appropriate treatments that meets the client's needs. Fundamental skills are applied to accurately calculate yardages and costs for the window treatments. Students provide detailed instructions for the various trades involved in the execution of the project from measuring to installation. Students explore these concepts through instructor demonstrations, interactive lectures, in-class exercises, assignments and field trips.

COURSE Business for the Arts Code: BUSM 24693 Hours / wk: 3

This course is an introduction to entrepreneurship - starting new business ventures. Students will learn how to assess entrepreneurial ventures and research a selected business opportunity. The course focuses on the entrepreneurship process and entrepreneurship in Canada. There is emphasis on practical vocational skills in researching, analyzing and reporting on a business opportunity. COURSE Interior Environments - Portfolio Code: DESN 26367 Hours / wk: 3

In this course students are introduced to the parameters of decorating for a commercial client as a foundation on which to generate creative decorating solutions for commercial spaces. Through in-class exercises and assignments, students examine functional requirements and aesthetic considerations in designing small commercial environments. This includes planning and designing small commercial spaces - from the programming to the final presentation drawings, based on a specified client/company profile.

COURSE CAD for Professional Practice Code: INFO 20016 Hours / wk: 3

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is an essential tool in the interior decorating industry. In this course students build on the introductory skills developed in the previous CAD course in order to create professional drawings that meet industry standards. Students setup drawings and apply design and drafting skills using a fixture library. Students complete the drawings with basic material rendering, notes and dimensions. They create practical implementations in 2D draw and modify commands in CAD to produce scaled hard copy and file outputs.

Drawing and Communication Skills: COURSE Code: DESN 20001 Hours / wk: 3 Commercial Spaces In this course, students apply their developing mechanical perspective principles and methodology in communicating interior decorating concepts. Furthermore, students apply greater speed and spontaneity to drawing, design, and presentation execution as required. In so doing, students demonstrate freehand drawing and perspective study that involve specific line and colour application techniques. Through in class drawing and journal exercises, students develop and utilize freehand drawing, sketching and media application skills in order to convey and present commercial interior concepts in a timely manner. Students further enhance their visual presentations utilizing industry software programs. Participants complete the concept communication components for the final project of the interiors course in this class.

COURSE Drafting and Detailing Code: DESN 23921 Hours / wk: 3

In this advanced course, students continue the development of drafting skills in order to reach professional standards, visually communicating details underlying the design concept. Students will study metric measurement, power telephone plans, reflected ceiling plans and sectional,

COURSE Kitchen and Bathroom Design Code: DESN 29402 Hours / wk: 3 In this course, students work on concept and design development, plans, elevations and rendered perspectives for the most popular renovations in homes today; the kitchen and bathroom. Furthermore students produce quotations for kitchen and bathroom projects. Through in-class exercises and assignments students learn to design custom kitchens that work efficiently for their client¿s lifestyle. Throughout the course, students work with current industry standard software which prepares them to enter the field of specialized kitchen and bathroom design. Professional Promotion and COURSE Code: BUSM 29798 Hours / wk: 3 Sales/Placement This course introduces students to the role of visual promotion of interior decorating services in today's economy. Students will learn how to analyse and interpret demographic material and demonstrate an ability to implement it in a targeted sales package. By practicing presentation and selling techniques, students learn to support the marketing strategies discussed in class. Field placements add to the students' professional experience. Students examine the promotion function through interactive lectures, project work and role-playing. A field placement provides the student an opportunity to apply marketing and/or more general interior decorating knowledge and skills in an employment situation. Home Fashion Display and Home COURSE Code: DESN 25436 Hours / wk: 3 Staging Students are introduced to the basics of home fashions display and home staging. Students will apply principles and elements of design studied in year one to display and staging scenarios. Areas of study include themes, colours and current trends in home fashions, green living, the business of home staging, and evaluating and implementing changes for a home staging project. Students will explore concepts through in-class exercises and role play, execution of assignments and hands on application.
