Second Church, Allendale, MI Director of Children and Youth Ministries Job Description Full Time Position

Qualifications: 1. Gives evidence of a deep love for Christ and His people. 2. Experience in educational and/or youth ministry giving evidence of an ability to organize, lead, encourage, motivate and work with others. 3. Degree or its equivalence in a related field or willingness to pursue such. 4. Possess excellent relational skills for personal connections with youth. 5. Possess excellent relational skills for working with fellow staff members and volunteer leaders of children/youth ministries. 6. Ability to integrate the children/youth ministries with other ministries and with the other generations within the church. 7. Ability to coordinate finances of ministries and oversee budgets and occasional fundraisers. 8. Ability to establish goals, evaluate, review, and monitor ministries to determine how well it has achieved the goals of helping children/youth come and see, stay and grow, go and serve. 9. A desire and willingness to be/become a member of Second Church.

Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Oversee all Children and Youth Ministries Provide oversight and visionary leadership for all Children and Youth Ministries (Pre-K – 12th grade) by encouraging, supporting, and serving as a resource person for the leaders of these ministries. This work will include developing and working with the Children and Youth Ministries Team to provide a comprehensive strategy and curriculum for our children and youth’s care and growth in Christ.

2. Coordinate/Primary Leader of Middle and High School Ministries Develop, enhance, and encourage a highly relational ministry by building positive long-term relationships with our youth (6th-12th grade) and parents. The director will work with our various volunteer leadership teams to develop, promote, and enhance Christian commitment, discipleship, and spiritual growth in our youth.

3. Maintain Good Relationships with Children and Youth Leaders/Volunteers Develop, enhance, and maintain close personal connections with the leaders of our various Children and Youth Ministries. This work will include encouraging and equipping them in their respective tasks in such a way as to promote mutual love, respect, and coordination of our ministries.

Working Relationships  Reports to and is supervised by the Senior Pastor.  Is a member of the church Ministries Team.  All staff members are finally accountable to the Church Council.  Will work with various other church teams: finance, communication, etc.

As part of the promises the church made and responsibilities accepted at baptism, the Children and Youth Ministry of Second Church exists to help children and youth – in the church and the community – to develop a relationship with God in an age and spiritually-appropriate environment.

In summary, the DCYM will organize and enlist volunteers for Church School and work with the leaders of GEMS and Cadets to maximize their ministry. Much more direct involvement is seen in SPARKS (middle school) and the high school Youth Group – fostering relationships, developing programs and meetings, developing youth and adult leaders. In all this, the Children and Youth Ministries must continually be integrated into the rest of the church family.

Result: The director knows the name of each child and his/her parent(s). Result: Inactive youth or parents are contacted quarterly either by phone or email. Result: The youth look forward to attending and are engaged in the various aspects of the ministry. Result: The DCYM contacts children and youth in an appropriate way during the week through school visits, attendance at school/sporting events, social media, etc. Result: Children and Youth become devoted followers of Jesus. Result: The Children and Youth ministry is not viewed as the church’s future, but the church’s present – being actively integrated into the Church Body. Result: As the youth grow in their faith and understanding, they challenge the leaders to grow as well. Result: In the middle and high school ministries, between the DCYM and the volunteer leaders, relationships are built with each young person. Result: Children and youth are not only involved in other aspects of church life, they are able to become active participants in churches as adults. Result: With the child or youth volunteer leaders, specific pastoral needs will be addressed, referring deeper needs to the elders and deacons. Result: Youth will be connected with Faith Friends (the primary vehicle) or with other options to make formal profession of faith.

Result: Each youth learns the priority of becoming the hands and feet of Christ in the community. Result: Age and spiritually-appropriate opportunities for serving are provided – particularly to middle and high school youth. At least once, this service opportunity is cross-cultural.

Leadership Training and Programmatic Results

Result: Establishing and maintaining ministries that engage pre-K through 12th grade that meet weekly or bi-weekly. Result: Along with the heads of specific ministries (GEMS and Cadets), a creative program has been established and maintained. Result: Volunteer leaders, teachers, helpers and other needed positions are filled at least one month before they begin serving. Result: Together with Church School teachers, a curriculum is chosen to ensure that yearly benchmarks have been met. Result: Planning and promotion of weekly programs and major events has taken place so that the targeted children or youth have participated. Result: In the middle and high school ministries, planning, organization, and communication of weekly (or bi-weekly) meetings has taken place. Result: Compliance documents have been distributed and adhered to by all ministry members (copyright licensing, Safe Church, background checks, permission forms, etc.) Result: Problems in any Children or Youth Ministry area are mediated in a way that honors both the vision of the ministry and the concerns of those who brought them. Timely and creative solutions will be sought. Result: Communication with parents has taken place – both written and in person. Avenues of communication remain open between staff and parents. Result: The “nuts-and-bolts” needs of the Children and Youth Ministry have been handled in a professional and timely manner, including: bulletin boards, newsletter or bulletin announcements. Result: Building use scheduling is coordinated with the appropriate member of the Facilities Team; an annual spending plan is discussed with members of the Finance Team.
