Nottingham Playhouse Youth Theatre

Nottingham Playhouse Youth Theatre

Nottingham Playhouse’s acclaimed Advanced Youth Theatre is offering a series of senior drama workshops during the October half term holiday. Who is it for? The workshops are for young people aged 14 – 21, and all the groups are mixed age-range. You will be assigned to a group when you arrive on the first morning. We can’t promise that friends will be placed in the same group, but you will be able to meet up at lunch time. Being able to work with people you don’t know is an important skill in theatre, and the Youth Theatre is a good place to develop it. When and where? The workshops run from 21st to 25th October 2013, from 10am to 4pm each day. They take place at Nottingham Playhouse and the Arts in Education Centre, College Street (three minutes’ walk from the Playhouse). The leaders are Sarah Stephenson, Allie Spencer and Ollie Smith. What will it involve? The workshops will explore William Shakespeare’s Richard III, to accompany Nottingham Playhouse’s co- production with York Theatre Royal. The week will include meeting the director and some of the cast. On Friday 25 th October, you will stay on to see the evening performance of Richard III (a free ticket to see this production is included in the price of the workshop.)

During the week each group will create a twenty minute piece of theatre, which they will perform at 2pm on Friday 25 th October. Family and friends are very welcome to attend the performance. Later the same afternoon, the participants from all the groups will join together at the Playhouse to show their pieces to each other. How to book Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Our Youth Theatre is often over-subscribed, so please book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Places cost £60, which covers a full week of workshops and the ticket to see Richard III. Other stuff you need to know

 The Advanced Youth Theatre is not suitable for Year 9 students. We do have a weekly Intermediate group for this age – Year 9 students can get information from our Box Office about our new weekly groups.  We must have a parent or guardian’s written consent for young people under 18 to take part. A registration form will be sent to you by our Box Office staff when you book, which must be returned by 12 noon on Friday 18th October 2013.  You must be available to attend every session of the Youth Theatre If you require time off for an audition please state this on your registration form. Time off for any other reason, eg doctors, dentists will not be granted.  The Youth Theatre will provide a fun experience, but it will be challenging too. We expect a high level of commitment, full attendance, good timekeeping, and appropriate behaviour. Students who are unable to meet these requirements may be asked to leave the group.  You may be asked to do preparation tasks by your leader in the evenings, for example learning lines or finding music, costume items or props to bring in. It is a very intense week and you are advised to keep your evenings as free as possible to avoid fatigue.  If you have special needs or disabilities, or a condition requiring medication, please contact Sarah Stephenson at Nottingham Playhouse (0115 873 6231) before the Youth Theatre begins.

And finally... We choose 20 performers and six technicians/stage managers from those attending the half-term workshops for our annual Youth Theatre production. If you’d like the chance to perform on the main stage at Nottingham Playhouse, you will need to attend the February half-term week (attend either of the two weeks or both) – even if you’re a technician or a stage manager and don’t really see yourself as a performer. Taking part doesn’t guarantee you will be selected, of course, but at least you are in with a chance!
