Dear Parent/Community of Shiloh,

It’s hard to believe this is our last official newsletter for the school year, and summer is right around the corner. I’d like to take this time to thank all of our parents and volunteers that support Shiloh throughout the year. I’d like to especially thank our PTO for their time, energy, and efforts. We would not find success without you! I’d also like to take this time to thank our 8th grade parents and wish you and your child the best of luck in high school. I look forward to hearing their great accomplishments. Although this is our last newsletter for this school year, we will continue to send out upcoming events and information through our Shiloh Glance and our summer postcard will include important dates as we open next school year. We are currently working on recommendations for next year, and those placements will be mailed out toward the end of May. Report Cards will not be handed out on the last day of school, but will be mailed out a few days after school lets out. We have many activities over the next few weeks and have

Page 1 of 8 planned meetings with our students to review our academic, attendance, and behavioral expectations. We want our students to finish strong! Please remind your child of our policies and expectations – we want all of our students to participate in these privileged activities. Our last student day is Friday, June 9th and it will be an early dismissal day. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns, and please review the enclosed newsletter for important information. We hope you have a great summer!

Sincerely,

Scott M. Lavender, Principal

Page 3 of 8 from the counselors… SHOUT’s Hunger Heroes initiative continues to collect unwanted, unopened, and uneaten food from students at lunch. Instead of throwing away that juice box or banana, we encourage students to donate them in the two marked bins in the cafeteria. Donated items are distributed to a local food pantry and a program that provides single serving snacks and food items to low income elementary school students to take home with them on weekends. Since starting near the end of October, we’ve kept nearly 1,000 apples from being thrown into the trash cans. Obviously we encourage students to eat all of the items they bring or buy for lunch, but Hunger Heroes provides an alternative to the trashcan for unwanted nondairy items in their original containers or sturdy fruits like bananas, oranges, and apples.

Important reminder from the School Nurse:

Page 4 of 8 MEDICATION: If possible, alternative plans should be made to avoid the administration of medication in school. Parents are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider to discuss the possibility of administering medication either before or after school. If alternative plans cannot be made, parental consent, a written authorized prescriber’s order, and instructions must be obtained before the school can administer ANY medication. Please note the following medication procedures. 1. All medications must be in the original, current prescription bottle properly labeled with the student's name, name of the medication, dosage, and the provider’s name. The label should be written for the school dose ONLY. We will be unable to accept bottles indicating other daily doses not given at school. 2. Medication consent form must be completed by the doctor and parent and on file with the school. All areas on our form must be completed by healthcare provider in order for it to be accepted. Provider will need to write the order listing a separate school dose in order for a separate school bottle to be filled by the pharmacy.

3. Medications must be brought in by a parent or legal guardian ONLY. Students are not to transport medications to or from school, as this is a violation of the Drug/Alcohol policy. Any student in violation of this will be referred to the administration. Please don’t put your child in this situation; contact the school if you are unsure of the policy. Medications include: (prescription/non- prescription) Liquids, pills, creams, ointments, acne wipes, nasal sprays, eye drops, vitamins, herbal remedies, and any item containing medication. The only exception to this policy is if a student has a signed consent form from their healthcare provider on file at school giving them permission to carry an inhaler or Epi Pen. Students can carry saline, sunscreen, chapstick, lotion, and hand sanitizer. Non-medicated cough drops are permitted with a parent note. 4. For daily medications it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide the school with only a one month supply of medication at a time. Medications must be brought in the original bottle labeled from the pharmacy. We cannot accept loose pills in a bag or transferred from one bottle to another. When an order is written involving a school day dose, pharmacists can provide two bottles - one for home and one for school use. Please ensure this is how your child’s prescription is filled. For your convenience, a Medication Consent Form is attached to this newsletter. https://www.carrollk12.org/instruction/studentservices/health/Documents/CCPS%20Medication%20Form %20-%20Front.pdf 5. Parents can bring in a new unopened bottle of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) for occasional administration in school without a providers order. If your child has a chronic health concern such as Migraines and may require medication more frequently please consult their health care provider for an order. CCPS TICK POLICY: Due to the possibility of Lyme’s Disease parents can request to have any tick removed from their child saved for parent to pick up. If you wish ticks to be saved please contact me via email or phone

Page 5 of 8 call at the beginning of the school year. IMMUNIZATIONS: All students who will be 7th graders this school year must provide the school with proof of having received both the Meningococcal and Tdap vaccines prior to the first day of school. Please contact the school nurse the week prior to school starting if you are having difficulty obtaining the immunizations prior to the start of the school year. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

May – June 2017 Shiloh Media Center

Page 6 of 8 Our Makerspace Monday events gave more than 60 Shiloh students an opportunity to engage in interactive STEM-related stations which encouraged discovery, creativity, hands on problem- solving, and innovation. Partnering with the Carroll County Public Library allowed us to offer our students the chance to design rockets and launch them, draw using a 3Doodler pen, program tiny robots to follow instructions, and experience Vive virtual reality! In addition, our students could create animals and patterns with origami and Spirograph, use snap circuits to illuminate bulbs and sound sirens, build giant structures, and code using Scratch. We look forward to offering Makerspace Mondays again in 2017-2018!

Page 7 of 8 A big thank you to a fantastic 8th grade news crew for doing a spectacular job this year on Shiloh Live! The efforts of these students made for an improved intro to our live show every morning! We learned a lot of cool historical facts and laughed out loud at their corny jokes. These students did a fantastic job getting the incoming crew ready to take over the show during the last several weeks of school. Thanks, guys and ladies!
