Guest Information for The Cleeve

Welcome to our Victorian Hunting Lodge; we hope that you have an enjoyable stay.

In this file you will find some information to help you make the most of your holiday.

General

 On arrival familiarise yourself with the route out of the building particularly from the bedroom(s) you and your children are using. In the event of a fire exit the building (alerting other occupants) and call the fire brigade immediately. The best mobile reception is away from the hillside (ie at the front of the building). Please also read the additional information about Fire and safety at the end of this document.

 Please leave everything as you found it (i.e. clean & tidy but you don’t need to make the beds!).

 Report any breakages, damage or problems as soon as possible so that there’s a chance we can solve any problems for both you and our next guests. Call 07767 474247 or 01237 476425 or (Gavin Taylor on 01643 702441 or 07902 280281) and leave a message if necessary or for less pressing matters you could email [email protected]

 Laundry: There is a washing machine and clothes dryer under the awning by the main kitchen window/back door. Clothes pegs are normally in the pantry and there is a washing line to one side of the lawn.

 Departure time: 10 a.m. so that we have enough time to get the house ready for the next guests as we did for you! Thank you.

 Open fires: The octagonal room fire place is for logs. The main reception South fire place is for coal. The North main reception fire place must not be used for fires.

 TV: You can change the device shown on the TV (e.g. DVD, Sky or games console) by selecting the input using the button that has a circle with an arrow going into it. On the main reception room TV press this button on the remote control and then use the up/down selection to choose an input. The TV in the octagonal sitting room uses the same symbol on its remote control but you change the selection by repeatedly pressing the circle/arrow button. After a few seconds the TV should then show the picture from there (if there is a device connected and it is on).

 Being “green”: There are a few simple things you can do to help the environment when staying at The Cleeve. Here are some examples; Close the curtains at night when it’s cold out (particularly those in the reception rooms). Keep the pantry door shut, as it vents heat straight outside otherwise - and the pantry will stay cooler with the door shut so that your food will stay fresher. Take a minute off your shower time. Keep the outside doors closed. It also makes sense to turn down the radiator thermostats instead of opening the windows and if the whole house (or a whole level) is too warm then simply turn down the wall thermostats near the stairs on each level.  Dishwasher: Please see the instructions that follow later. The dishwasher is a semi-commercial one and it may not work like your dishwasher at home so please don’t assume that you can operate it without reading the instructions as you will could be disappointed with the results.

 Ticks: [Common sense] - These bugs are a fact of life in any parks, gardens and country areas in the UK and many other countries, where animals roam. It is not a problem unique to particular locations; they probably live near you! You will probably spend more time outside on holiday than you do at home, however, so when out in the countryside or gardens accessible to wild animals, including ours, cover up bare legs etc. and avoid brushing against longer vegetation or animals - including dogs, cats etc. It is particularly important to do this in the summer season. Check yourself and family members periodically as a routine and pay special attention to this when you finish your countryside walks and other activities. Remove ticks with tweezers or a special tick removal tool available from the local chemist as soon as possible to minimise the chance of infections. If concerned about a tick bite, visit a GP. There is lots of further information online.

 BBQ: This is located in courtyard storage area. Simply clean it and return it to the courtyard after using it.

 Garden games: There are some garden games in the awning area. Please check they are complete when you return them (let us know if any bits are missing so we can get them replaced).

 Please do not change the location of furniture such as tables/beds at all. Do not take indoor furniture outside or outdoor furniture inside.

 Please do not rearrange any wiring, e.g. for audio-visual or games console equipment.

 No smoking anywhere inside the building. All smoking debris to be removed from the grounds.

 Noise: Please be considerate to our neighbours, particularly when outside later in the evening. Porlock is a quiet village with many elderly residents as well as young families and visitors who have chosen the area because of the peaceful atmosphere. Though The Cleeve feels very private we do have some neighbours and any noise carries up the valley.

 No fireworks or bonfires are allowed at The Cleeve. Again, this is in consideration of our neighbours. If you wish to use our barbecue this is fine but do please move indoors by 11pm (see above).  Rubbish: please put all rubbish into bin liners and tie them up and place them in one of the green wheelie bins (by the garage). Rubbish is collected from the Parsons Street side of the road bridge on the side furthest away from The Cleeve very early on every other Monday morning. The easy way to deal with this is to take the wheelie bins there on Sunday night, take out the tied bin bags until the wheelie bins are empty and to bring the wheelie bins back with you. On occasion we are able to send someone to help with the rubbish but their availability is unpredictable so assume they won’t be present.  You can check to see if it is this Monday on the internet here: https://www.westsomersetonline.gov.uk/refusecollectionsearch (currently you enter our postcode, TA24 8QW and select "The Cleeve", currently on number 2 of the results).

o The next refuse collection date: Monday, 1st August 2016 and fortnightly thereafter. o The next recycling collection date is Monday, 25th July 2016 and weekly thereafter.

Location for bin bags and recycling.  Cleaning: There are vacuum cleaners & mops etc. either in the under stairs cupboard or the pantry.

 Recycling: please place recycling in the bags inside the designated wheelie bin in our car park by our garage. Do NOT break any glass or mix up recycling as the bin men will refuse to take it. Follow the same instructions as for rubbish (except try to keep recycling bags apart from rubbish bags).  When you go out, make sure all windows are closed, all lights are off and lock up. At some times of year you may find small flies or moths etc. are attracted to the lights and that they get in, particularly if you forget the lights (mainly on 1st and 2nd floor at the front). Remember that you are in the heart of the countryside and there is a lot more wildlife of every kind than perhaps you expect. The best plan of action is to keep windows and doors closed in rooms where the lights may be switched on after dusk. If you do find that flies or other insects have made their way in, close the curtains, spray the area liberally (not too close) with fly spray, take everyone out of the room, turn the lights off and close the door for a while (e.g. 15 minutes). Return with the vacuum cleaner! Remember the lights.

 Logs: You should find some in a basket by the fire. There will normally be more supplies in the awning area. If this is not enough then several shops in the village also supply them.

 Heating: There is a thermostat on each floor, we recommend a setting of 20 on the ground floor and less on the 1st and 2nd floor to make sleeping easy (perhaps 18). You can then adjust the thermostats on each radiator in each room as desired (rather than opening a window to let the heat out). There is a timer for each floor and a timer for the towel rails in the boiler room (off the downstairs shower room). The timers are marked as follows: 1, 2 and 3 correspond to floors: ground, one and two respectively. Timer “T” is for towel rails.

 Hot water: There is a timer for this in the boiler room marked “H2” and if you are a larger group this gives hot water quicker. Note that H2 only works when H1 (on the left) is on so that should be left on.

 Water leak: (yes, it happened! so just in case…) you can turn off the water by turning in the tap on the pipe next to the downstairs toilet (off the boot room by the main door). Then turn on a downstairs cold water taps to minimise further leaking. Notify us immediately if you need to do this, please!

 Water pressure: during ordinary use there are typically only a few things (or less) using water at any one time and the system maintains the pressure. If everyone is using showers / baths etc. continuously at the same time for more than about 10 minutes then the pressure will drop until the pressurised tanks have time to fill up again, (as in this time each shower will use about 150+ litres of water and there are 6 of them = 900+ litres). As most people don’t take quite as long as 10 minutes with the showers etc. on full blast this is not normally a problem.

 Internet: You should be able to pick up our wireless router in the reception rooms and possibly elsewhere in/outside the house. Look for a signal “SKY60570”. The encryption uses “WPA” (not “WEP”) and the key (all capital letters) is XJEWIZOB.  Bathrooms: Do NOT use bubble bath in the Jacuzzi bath. Other than this everything should be straightforward. Remember to switch on the extractor to get rid of steam (normally a switch on the outside of the bathroom). To use the Jacuzzi bath you will need to switch it on with the low level switch by the bathroom door.

 Outdoors: Use stout footwear and expect even dry areas to be slippery or to have hidden holes. There is normally a great deal of wildlife and we have no control over where they dig etc!

 Please, wherever possible, confine outdoor shoes to the downstairs hallways and boot room. There is plenty of space for storing both these and wet coats etc in the boot room.

 Fire extinguishers: If one is set off you need to let us know although the mess from some of them makes it obvious. Use the correct fire fighting apparatus for the right fire (e.g. the CO2 extinguisher on the ground floor is for electrical fires and not for use in kitchen fires involving cooking oil etc – the kitchens have their own fire extinguishers).

 Aga: You should not need to adjust anything on the Aga, make sure that children do not play around it (as they may trip the oil supply off or hurt them selves while fiddling etc!). On very rare occasions the Aga might go out. To re-light the Aga, (assuming that the oil supply has been left on):

o Get a box of matches ready. o Open the middle door at the bottom. o Lift the metal plate (with a window on it) up and out. You may need to shake it a little bit before it will move. o Inside you will now see a round perforated cylinder. Check that there is not already a flame present inside the cylinder at the bottom, if there is the Aga is already lit. o Take care that parts are not still too hot to touch. On the perforated cylinder there is a very small round flap in the middle that lifts up (it is hinged at the top), gently lift this up so it stays up and you will see a lighting hole. o Strike a match and point it at an angle down into the hole and the wick should light immediately. o Withdraw the match and blow it out! o Now do everything in reverse, i.e. . Drop the small round flap down. . Put the metal plate that has a window on it back into its slot. . Close the bottom middle door. o If the Aga was completely cold then it may take 24 hours to heat up. Obviously if it had only been out for a short time then it will take far less time to be ready again. o If the Aga does not light or stay lit following this procedure or if you are not sure about something just call us and we will try to help out of course.

 Postcards: There are some “Cleeve” postcards in the main reception room. Feel free to send some to your friends! Our Grounds

Outline showing the boundary of our grounds at The Cleeve. Much of the grounds are allowed to be untamed to encourage wildlife.

 If you discover a fire: Raise the alarm. Close all doors and windows to prevent it from spreading and unless the fire is very minor leave the building by the nearest safe exit. Do not panic and do not stop to collect personal belongings. Once safely out of the building phone the fire brigade. The best mobile reception is away from the hillside (ie at the front of the building).

 Only if the fire is minor and you can do so safely: Use the appropriate fire extinguisher or fire blanket (see below). If you are not able to deal with the fire quickly yourself, evacuate the building as above.

 If you hear the smoke alarms or shouts of fire: Make your way to the door. If there is any smoke in the room and you are in bed, roll out of bed and crawl to the door – do not stand up as smoke, heat and gases rise. Feel the door with the back of your hand. If the door or knob is hot, open slowly and be ready to slam shut if necessary. Check the corridor. If everything is clear, walk to the nearest exit, banging on other doors and shouting FIRE as you go. If there is smoke in the corridor close your door behind you and crawl close to the wall to the exit. Walk to the ground level and exit the building. If there is no exit route passable, return to your room and shut the door, block the bottom of the door with a towel and raise the alarm from your window. When outside the building please make your way to the car park where you can be accounted for by your fellow guests.

 Exits: There are exits from the building in the following locations

Main front door – off main hallway Rear door – off main breakfast kitchen Courtyard door – off second kitchen

In addition if none of these exits can be reached and you are upstairs, consider the following possible exit routes

Main 1st floor family bathroom – window exits to a flat roof Octagonal bedroom – window may enable exit to nearby bank Rear first floor bedrooms – window may enable exit to nearby bank.

 For your safety:

Smoke alarms are fitted on every floor. Some of these have additional integral emergency lighting. Fire guards provided for both open fires. Kitchen fire extinguishers provided (1 per kitchen). Kitchen fire blankets provided (1 per kitchen). A CO2 fire extinguisher provided on the ground floor (for electrical fires, as there is some audio visual equipment available on this floor). An additional large fire extinguisher is provided on the 1st floor by the octagonal bedroom, by the 1st floor stairs and on the 2nd floor landing. All adults and older children should familiarise themselves with the location of the various extinguishers and fire blankets. Fire guards should be used. Guests with physical disabilities should ask someone to be prepared to give them assistance in the event of an emergency.

 Fire extinguishers: If one is set off you need to let us know, although the mess from some of them makes it obvious. Use the correct fire fighting apparatus for the right fire (e.g. the CO2 extinguisher on the ground floor is for electrical fires and not for use in kitchen fires involving cooking oil etc – the kitchens have their own fire extinguishers). Parking.

 Please use our car park: There is space for 6 – 8 cars at The Cleeve. If you have to park on Parsons Street please remember that some parts of the road are narrow and that the emergency services must be able to get their wide vehicles past (such as fire engines). The widest part of Parsons Street is by our foot bridge. Dishwasher instructions

We have provided a commercial dishwasher to reduce the time needed over a domestic one (so that you may spend more time enjoying your holiday).

Important: this dishwasher may require slightly different handling to what you may be used to – please familiarise yourself with the information below.

Energy saving washing This commercial dishwasher is a water and energy saving appliance. For best results follow these tips: You may connect the commercial dishwasher to a hot water line. This is particularly suitable with energy-saving water heating sources such as solar energy systems. If the hot water system is electrically heated and if loads comprise primarily glassware we recommend connecting the appliance to the cold water line. Make full use of the baskets' capacity without overloading. This ensures the most economical washing. Choose a program that best suits the degree of soiling and the type of dishes being washed. Use the Normal program for energy saving dishwashing. From the aspect of combined energy and water consumption, this program is the most efficient for washing normally soiled dishes. Observe the detergent manufacturer's recommendations for detergent dosage. When using powder or liquid detergent, you can reduce the amount by 1/3 of the normal dosage if the baskets are only half full. Adding salt:

Intended use This commercial dishwasher has short runtimes with heavy duty cleaning power and is intended for commercial use in offices, lunch rooms, clubhouses, workshops, daycares, schools, large kitchens and similar professional environments. It can also be used in domestic households and in similar residential environments for example on farms, by customers in hotels, motels, bed and breakfast and other related establishments. This commercial dishwasher is not intended for continuous use. This dishwasher is not suitable for processing medical devices. Use this commercial dishwasher only for "Dishwashing" as defined in the Operating instructions, i.e. for cleaning dishes and cutlery. Any other use, conversion or modification is not permissible and possibly hazardous. We will not be held liable for damage caused by inappropriate use or improper operation. This commercial dishwasher is intended for stationary indoor use. The special inserts are to be used for their specific purpose only. Individuals who are incapable of using the appliance safely because of limited physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience or knowledge must not use this appliance without supervision or instruction by a responsible person. Children in the vicinity Always supervise any children in the vicinity of the appliance. Never allow children to play with the appliance. Among other hazards, children run the risk of locking themselves in the commercial dishwasher! Do not allow children to operate the commercial dishwasher. Keep detergents away from children! If detergents are ingested, they can cause chemical burns in the mouth and throat, or even suffocation. Therefore, keep children away from the commercial dishwasher when open. There may still be detergent residues in the appliance. Seek medical help immediately if a child has ingested any detergent.
