Briefly describe the basic services/programs of the agency, client population served, and the size of your staff. CPC is a nationwide agency that provides sex offender treatment for adults and juveniles. In Maine, we currently have 10 groups in the community. (Biddeford, Elliot, Brunswick, Saco, Portland, Auburn). We work closely with collateral service providers, including probation and DHHS. We also provide sex offender evaluations for Department of Probation, DHHS and other service providers. CPC also provides outreach, education and trainings. Currently we have 9 treatment providers in Maine.

The population involves people who have been convicted of sexual offenses. They are mostly male, although now we do have female offenders. The intern(s) would get experience working with people with substance abuse issues, major mental health issues, criminal histories, cognitive issues etc.

When are agency staff and other important meetings held? Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10-2. Occasional Friday mornings

What characteristics or qualities would be helpful for a student to have to best utilize the placement as a learning opportunity? A mature student that can tolerate difficult material that clients bring to group, be open to process the impact of this content on oneself and be willing to engage in safe self-care.

List the learning opportunities available for the student in your setting: Primarily students will be trained in sex offender specific treatment involving psycho ed group work. Students will participate in case conferences and consultations with collateral providers, understanding how the community works together to provide safety for communities and offenders. There will be opportunity to participate in intakes, psychosexual assessment, and evaluations for sexual dangerousness. There will also be opportunity to work collaboratively with agencies doing family and survivor work. Students will have a chance to participate in staff and policy making meetings – gaining insight into how agencies balance the need to provide services with the need to stay financially solvent.

The way I have organized the internship in the past involves: Supervision with me, and co-lead/observation of groups in Biddeford on Wednesdays. They would also have an opportunity to do individual work on Wednesdays. They would also choose tweo other sites to co-lead/observe (depending on where they live). We have groups in Augusta, Waterville, Rockland, Caribou, Portland, Brunswick, Auburn, and Biddeford. They would have the opportunity to sit in on containment meetings, our quarterly staff meetings, and interact with collateral service providers (DHHS and probation officers)
