In Chinese - Virtual shopping students complete a number of activities based on an online resource. They then work on a number of creative tasks which incorporate the learning from the initial online activity.

Explore Students explore a virtual shopping tour. They are exposed to authentic texts related to Chinese shopping areas and products. To assist students in their exploration, a number of URLs of Chinese shopping centres and online shopping sites are provided. Sometimes sites are unavailable or change over time. If this happens, students can search entering appropriate key words into their search engine.

Students exercise their skills in selecting and summarising information by recording details of their shopping experience in a Word document. Students then use the information from these notes to produce a talk about their virtual shopping experience

Before writing their script, students can listen to a model and make notes in English on the worksheet provided.

In their talk, students can include information about what they bought, where they bought it and who they bought it for. Students are also encouraged to justify the appropriateness of the gifts selected for each person.

Create an online catalogue in Chinese This activity can be individual, pair or small group work.

It is recommended that students create the first draft of their catalogue in their notebooks. Teachers can check the drafts before the students publish their final versions.

Create a radio commercial in Chinese This activity can be individual, pair or small group work, building on the first task – create an online catalogue.

It is recommended that students write the first draft in their notebook for teachers to check it. They can then rehearse it before recording it.

If recording hardware and audio editing software is not available, students can still present their radio commercial orally. Setting up a desk with a fake microphone may help to create an atmosphere for students to act out the role of a radio announcer.

Create a role-play This activity is group work, building on the first and second tasks. Pre-learning of relevant expressions and linguistic structures related to the topic of ‘shopping’ will assist students to complete this task.

It is recommended that students write the first draft of their role-play in their notebooks for teachers to check. They can then rehearse it before filming or recording it.

When every group has submitted their videos, the class can then judge the videos. Prizes could be awarded for different categories eg the videos featuring ‘the best shopper of the year’, ‘the best shop assistant of the year’ etc.

If filming hardware and video editing software is not available, students can still present their role-play. As an alternative, they can use digital presentation media such as Windows Movie Maker, PowerPoint, Captivate etc. to create videos incorporating still images and audio.
