Cold War Stories Project

Task: Using a powerpoint teach the class one country’s story from the Cold War (end of WWII to mid 1990s).

Create groups of 2 total people. Keep in mind you cannot work with these people again for your final project.

Topic Options:

1. Israel/Palestine Conflict (Causes and Effect of the various battles and alliances) 2. The Korean War (Causes and Effects) 3. Cuba (Fidel Castro, Communism, and the Bay of Pigs) 4. Iran (The Shah, Ayatollah Khomeni, Iraq Iran War) 5. Guatemala (Jacobo Arbenz and the CIA wars) 6. Afghanistan (Soviet Afghan War and the rise of the Mujahadeen, Al Qaeda) 7. Egypt (Suez Crisis, 6 Day War, Yom Kippur War) 8. Vietnam (Causes and effects of the Vietnam War) 9. Iraq (Iraq Iran War, Rise of Sadaam Hussein, Operation Iraqi Freedom)

*You must use three books (not including your text book) and two online websites in your research Goals:

A. Explain the necessary background to understand the events assigned B. Explain the role the United States played in this event C. Discuss the ramification of U.S. involvement and the current state of that nation D. For you to develop story telling/group work skills.

You must submit an MLA formatted bibliography.

1. The presentation should last one class period 2. These projects should be high in quality, visually entertaining, and you should include some kind of audio or video (10 minutes max). 3. It should also be written so that a person who has not done the research that you have will know what you are talking about. 4. Make sure you check the rubric so that you can maximize your points.

Suggested Steps: 1. Step1: a. Go home and read basic information about your topic. Check the textbook for information as well. Go online – read as much as you can. Go to the library and check out books on the topic and country. 2. Step 2: a. Map out the story of this country from your background research. Delegate different sections of the research to the members of your group. They should become experts on this portion of your country’s history. b. Discuss with your group how you think you should teach this story to the class. Brainstorm those methods other teachers use that you find particularly effective and have a general plan regarding how you will present your topic. 3. Step 3: a.
