Job Purpose:

To undertake research on the BBSRC funded Research project - Detecting cytosine methylation at the single molecule level, under the supervision of the award holder, Tracy Melvin.

Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (6-10 bullet points maximum) % Time  To undertake a range of research activities under supervision on the project. This will include 80% laboratory experimentation, literature review, critical evaluation and interpretation, computer- based data analysis, evaluation in consultation with the research award holders and may involve consultation with the team of Prof. Tom Brown (Oxford) and Prof. J. Baumberg (Cambridge) and collaborators. More specifically, the post holder will be expected to perform optical experiments and fabricate microdevices for single biomolecule detection. The project will involve (i) working together with a biochemist responsible for preparing small quantities of biomolecular solutions and (ii) work collaboratively with other members of the programme providing and sharing samples, data and devices.  The post holder will be expected to take a leading role in the preparation of publication materials 5% for leading international peer-reviewed journals and for preparing conference presentations.  To carry out administrative tasks associated with the project, for example, risk assessment of research activities, participation in project meetings and documentation. 5% Implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely formal reporting.  To work collaboratively with other PhD students and post-doctoral researchers on projects within the post-holders expertise as well as the cleanroom technical staff. 10%  Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post TBA holder.

Direct responsibility to Tracy Melvin, contact with other staff employed in the teams of TM and Tom Brown as well as the cleanrooms. Work in collaboration with teams at Chalmers University that are involved in the fabrication aspects of the programme.

Special Requirements: Must be able to travel and work at laboratories of collaborators from time to time.

Person Specification

How to be Criteria Essential Desirable assessed Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience: PhD or equivalent Experience in Application and qualification or single molecule interview experience in an methods, Engineering field, nanomaterials, Physics. micro/nanofabric ation, Experience in microfluidics, optics spectroscopy

Some experience in theoretical simulation studies

Knowledge of LabView or other software-based approaches for control and measurement.
