VI. October 27th Agenda
NEW BUSINESS
Student Services – Health Care Clinic, Child Care, Housing, etc. (10 minutes) Senators are concerned that little is being done to follow through on promise that tuition increase funds would be used to improve student services. Senate must force the issue and create momentum for change. Decision - Senate convenes a Committee on Student Services, first meeting Thursday, Nov. 3rd, 12:30 pm in Boardroom. Community Service – Big Brothers Big Sisters; Oct. 31st Halloween event for kids (Gilbert Sena has information on it & asked us to volunteer); etc. Need more info on Halloween event.
A) Basketball Spirit Week events planning (10 minutes) Decision – Contribute $50 to Sostenga and raffle off five $10 gift certificates to individuals who submitted valid raffle tickets at Basketball Spirit Harvest Festival, plus one t-shirt each to three more individuals. B) Traditional Agriculture & Sustainable Living Conference (5 minutes) – Decision – donate fruits and vegetables remaining from Basketball Spirit Harvest Festival to this conference. Student Senate will have a free table at the conference. C) Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities – Annual Conference Student Ambassador Program – Oct 29-31 (3 minutes) No senators going but President Genauer has written a thank you letter to USDA for sponsoring 2 Northern students to attend HACU, which President Barcelo will present . D) Events Assessment & Feedback – Campus Clean-Up Day and Basketball Spirit Harvest Festival (5 minutes) Campus Clean-Up Day was small but positive (four people participating) and Basketball Spirit Harvest Festival was great event that was successful through the hard work of nearly all senators. Much gratitude to Carlos Martin for volunteering as our lead chef. Senators expressed support for paying him to do future event, such as Thanksgiving Dinner.
E) Nov. 7th Green Fire Film with NM Land Commissioner Ray Powell (10 minutes) Decision – Senate approves paying for ad in Green Fire Times and $750 total expenditure for this event and other “Land Ethic Series” event, including snacks and refreshments. Senate recognizes we must do strong student outreach for event. F) Student Regent Resolution (10 minutes) Decision -- Senate votes to approve having a student advisor on the Board of Regents, in support of President Barcelo’s proposal. Senators commit to gathering petition signatures for a student regent on the Board of Regents until the end of the fall semester, to be presented to our elected representatives in the NM House and Senate.
G) National Student/Campus Activism in Solidarity with “Occupy Wall Street” movement – Nov. 2-3 National Solidarity Teach-Ins (initiated by Occupy Colleges movement) and Nov. 2 General Strike (initiated by Occupy Oakland). Decision – Student Senate will host a teach-in at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd (location TBA) followed by a student walk-out and rally at 1:45 pm at the Connie Valdez Memorial Garden. Working group meeting at 1 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 1st in the commons area. H) Proposal from Sylvia Vergara, NNMC Music Appreciation Instructor – National Institute of Flamenco has given $10 discount for Northern students (to attend El Museo performance with Teo Morca, “an enchanting production featuring icons of flamenco dance and live Spanish classical music” at NHCC in Albuquerque) – reducing cost to $10, $20 and $30 per ticket. Request for ASNNMC to help co- sponsor student attendance. Decision – Senate votes to approve $150 to National Institute of Flamenco. I) T-shirts for ASNNMC – Juan will adjust the logo design and send to senators for vote via email.
