McCormack Award Established in 1950 to honor the late Arthur T. McCormack, a Kentucky State Health Official, the McCormack Award is presented each year to a current, or in some cases, a former, public health official who has served in public health for at least ten years, been a Chief State Health Official for at least five years, demonstrated excellence and has made a significant contribution to the knowledge and practice of the field. Because of the strict qualifications for this award, only a certain number of current State and Territorial Health Officials are eligible to be honored. The eligible nominees for the 2010 Arthur T. McCormack Award are: 1. Chris Curtis, MPH, West Virginia Commissioner of Public Health since July 2002 2. William D. Hacker, MD, Kentucky’s Commissioner of Health since November 2004 3. Paul K. Halverson, DrPH, Arkansas’ Director and State Health Officer since July 2005 4. Doneen B. Hollingsworth, South Dakota’s Secretary of Health since October 1995 5. C. Earl Hunter, MBA, South Carolina’s Commissioner since August 2001 6. Joann Schaefer, MD, Nebraska’s Director since September 2005 7. Joseph K. Villagomez, Northern Marianas Islands’ Secretary since January 2006

Swearingen Award Since 1979, the Noble J. Swearingen Award, named for a former Executive Director of ASTHO, has been bestowed on one individual in public health administration who has ten or more years of experience in a state health agency and five or more years in service to the ASTHO Senior Deputy Committee or in some other capacity. Tierney, MSW, (RI), 1984 Excellence in Public Health Award Occasionally, the Association presents its Excellence in Public Health Award to recognize outstanding service on behalf of the public health community. Traditionally the award is presented in two categories, national-level and state-level and is for outstanding national leadership in promoting health and preventing disease as an alternative to more costly payments for sickness and illness.
