March Training Plan Notes

Focus: Basement Fire Operations – Basement fires are considered one of the single most dangerous fires that firefighters will have to attack. This is due simply to the fact that our entry point is the same as the flowpath. During the month we will focus on ways to attack a basement fire safely and efficiently.

Company Training  Lecture – Attic Fire Operations o A Shift – 03/27/14 o B Shift – 03/25/14 o C Shift – 03/20/14  Multi-Company – Landing Zone Operations (w/Lifeline) o A Shift – 03/18/14 o B Shift – 03/13/14 o C Shift – 03/14/14

Core Competencies  PPE Donning (FC-04) – Time for our annual donning of PPE for time. Our goals are 60 seconds for PPE, 60 seconds for SCBA, and less than 30 seconds to finish donning mask and gloves as you prepare for entry into a structure. There are three different methods in which the participant is expected to donn an SCBA.  Initial Attack Drill (FC-14) – Another annual drill to begin spring with is the initial attack drill. As a crew drill on being the first arriving apparatus at a working structure fire. Conduct a 360, deploy an initial attack line, stage tools, and deploy a RIT line. Discuss strategies to be considered if the second due apparatus is delayed in its arrival.  LODD (Basement Fire) (FC-57) – This is a review of two incidents that involved basement fires. The first is a video review of a close call incident in which firefighters were nearly trapped in a basement fire. The second is a review of NIOSH Report 2008-09 in which two firefighters died from a floor collapse due to a basement fire. Please review both of these incidents and discuss ways in which we can prevent having this happen to us.  District Familiarization (Basements) (FC-58) – This is a unique way to do district familiarization as well as tie it into our focus for the month. As a crew drive around your first due district focusing on your residential section and identify homes that have basements. Discuss the features of the home that tell you that it has a basement, what you should be looking for as you do your initial size up, and how you would set up for a fire if it appeared likely it was in the basement.  Building a Z-Rig (FC-59) – One of the more common rope rescue systems that can be utilized for various rescues is the “z-rig”. A video has been made by the Training Division showing how to build a “z-rig”. If possible request that R-4 to come to your station and utilize the rope equipment to build a “z- rig” after watching the video.  Basement Push (FC-60) – One of the tactics that we will be discussing in our lecture is one known as the “basement push”. This is when no other option is available but to enter the basement via the stairs to attack the fire. This is the most dangerous method and should be performed carefully. A video has been created by the Training Division to show the correct procedures for a basement push. Review the video and if possible practice the tactic with your crew.
