The young Dean was educated in the Orangeburg 28 County School system, where he not only excelled in football, 29 being named a high school AllAmerican his junior year, but also 30 met the love of his life, Grace Dukes. His talent and tenacity 31 earned him a football scholarship to the University of South 32 Carolina (USC). He was honored to be inducted into the USC 33 Lettermen’s Association and Sigma Chi Fraternity; and 34 35 Whereas, at the age of eight, he began his distinguished career in 36 “newspapering,” his inaugural position being bicycle carrier for 37 the Times & Democrat (T&D) of Orangeburg. At age twelve, he 38 was a production employee and columnist for the Orangeburg 39 Observer. Over consecutive summer college breaks, he served as 40 the T&D’s interim sports editor and managing editor; and 41

[5290] 2 1 Whereas, upon graduation from USC in 1956, he was 2 commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, serving a 3 threeyear tour of duty as a MAPS navigator and logging more than 4 two thousand flying hours. He then returned to the T&D as 5 managing editor and in 1962 was named publisher, enjoying that 6 position for thirtyseven years until his retirement in 1999. As an 7 industry pioneer, in 1965 he was among the first publishers 8 nationwide to convert to offsetprinting technology; and 9 10 Whereas, Mr. Livingston served his community and profession as 11 president of the South Carolina Press Association and its 12 foundation and as an active member of the American Newspaper 13 Publishers Association and South Carolina Newspaper Publishers 14 Association. A man of Christian faith, he served as both board 15 member and Sunday School teacher at St. Paul’s United Methodist 16 Church; and 17 18 Whereas, further, he was an adjunct professor at both the USC 19 School of Journalism and Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College. 20 He enjoyed twentyfive years of service to Rotary International, 21 serving a term as president, as well as serving as president of the 22 Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce. He also served both the 23 Salvation Army and Boy Scouts of America; and 24 25 Whereas, in 1989, Mr. Livingston was the recipient of South 26 Carolina State College’s Distinguished Achievement Award for 27 exemplary achievement in business and outstanding community 28 leadership and service; and 29 30 Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of fiftynine 31 years, Grace Dukes Livingston; his daughter, Donna Grace Laird 32 (O’Neal); his son, Dean Livingston, Jr. (Tina); beloved 33 granddaughters Grace Laird Johnston (John), Charlotte Laird, 34 Lauren Laird, and Virginia Grace Livingston. He will be greatly 35 missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Now, 36 therefore, 37 38 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 39 40 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 41 by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of 42 Dean Bennette Livingston of Lexington, former publisher of the

[5290] 3 1 Times and Democrat in Orangeburg, and extend the deepest 2 sympathy to his family and many friends. 3 4 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 5 the family of Dean Livingston. 6 XX 7
