OPENING THIS WEEK (28 August 2010):

TOKYO-JIMA

 The only major release scheduled for this week is Gaga’s Tokyo Jima. Although total awareness is just above norm at 27% (norm is 25%), unaided is lower at 3% (norm is 5%). “Definite” interest is also soft, with just 5% of those aware saying they would be interested in seeing the film at a cinema (norm is 10%). First choice (op/rel) is at 3%, reaching 4-5% among the older quads, and falling behind holdover competition such as this week’s number one opener Hanamizuki (Toho), at 11%.

OPENING NEXT WEEK (4 September 2010):

 Although Kadokawa’s Okan No Yomeiri holds 2% unaided awareness and 29% total awareness (a rise of 8% on last week), as yet first choice remains below norm at 1% (older females are the only quad to register a full 1% first choice).

 Beck (Shochiku) is the strongest title of the week, with 8% naming the film top of mind and 41% aware overall (up from 5% and 34% last week). “Definite” interest is at 8%, with first choice at 3% overall, rising to 4% among younger males

Japan MARKET OVERVIEW

OTHER PRE-RELEASE TITLES:

 Two weeks out Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D (Sony) has seen further increases in awareness, up 2% points unaided to 7% and at 33% total awareness, up from 30%. “Definite” interest is at 19% (norm is 11%), with first choice at 5%.

 Toho’s Umizaru 3 has seen a good uplift in awareness three weeks out to push ahead of fellow release Gekijyouban Kidousenshi Gundam (Shochiku). The former title is up 9% points to 37% total aware and unaided is at 7% (was 4%). First choice has also increased to 5% from 3% last week (highest among younger males and older females at 6%). Gekijyouban… holds lower awareness at 2 % unaided and 18% total awareness (up 2% points this week) but a similar level of first choice at 4% (unchanged since last week and skewing heavily to younger males at 8%).

 Avatar Special Edition (Fox) now at seven weeks out is at 28% total awareness (up 4% points) and picks up 1% point of unaided awareness. First choice is at 3%, highest among younger females at 5%.

 In the 16-week window, Paramount’s Shrek Forever After holds 12% total awareness and picks up 1% unaided among younger females. 7% of those aware say they would be “definitely” interested in seeing the film.

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

Opening Market Summary week 11  2 weeks out, Resident Evil: Afterlife continues to build on the gains made last week. September Unaided awareness is up from 5% to 7%, whilst total awareness is now at 33% (was 30%).  “Definite” interest is at 19% (norm is 11%) and first choice is 5%.  The majority of measures are led by older males at 7% unaided, 40% total aware, 20% “definite” interest and 9% first choice.  Resident Evil: Afterlife currently leads the release week.

Eat Pray Love

Opening Market Summary week 18  Eat Pray Love has made good gains in awareness three weeks from release. Unaided September mentions are up from less than 1% to 2% overall, reaching 3% among older females. Total awareness has doubled to 18% in the past week, skewing to older females at 33% (a rise of 18% points).  “Definite” interest has held at 12% week on week.  First choice remains at 1% overall but saw gains among the key older female audience, from 2% to 4% week on week.  Umizaru 3 leads the week, having also seen a 9% point gain in awareness to 37% (at 7% unaided). “Definite” interest is at a normative 11% and first choice is at 5% (up from 3%) reaching 6% among younger males and older females. Gekijyouban … also registers good first choice at 4%, although this is less of a threat to the key female audience for Eat Pray Love as it is appealing most strongly to younger males at 8%.

(JP228) Non-English language title information AKUNIN The film is based on a crime story by Shuichi Yoshida which was originally serialized in Asahi Shimbun in 2006 and later published as a novel. In the story, a young female insurance agent is murdered and police initially suspect a rich college student is the culprit. However, their investigation soon leads them to a lonely blue collar worker named Yuichi (Satoshi Tsumabuki). By the time police have sorted this out, Yuichi meets a woman named Mitsuyo (Eri Fukatsu) by chance and the two attempt to evade detection in her car. During their time together, the unlikely pair gradually become captivated by one another

BECK Maho Minami (Shiori Kutsuna) returns from Japan after studying in New York. Her half brother Ryusuke Minami (Hiro Mizushima) is an ultra talented guitarist. Maho & Ryosuke then meet Koyuki, a fellow young teen whom Maho takes interest in. Soon enough, Ryosuke and Koyuki form a 5 piece rock band named "Beck," while Maho and Koyuki become involved in a romantic relationship.

BUSHI NO KAKEIBO Set during the Meiji Restoration period of Edo era Japan, Naoyuki (Masato Sakai) belongs to the 8th generation of the Inoyama family, a wealthy family known for finance & accounting. He is also a gifted mathematician and uses the abacus with extreme skills. Naoyuki works under the declining Kaga domain. Because of this, Naoyuki and his wife Koma (Yukie Nakama) suffer hardships as their stature and wealth dissipates.

BYAKUYAKÔ A pawn shop owner in Osaka is murdered, but due to a lack of conclusive evidence the police lists the man's death as a suicide. Detective Sasagaki, who investigated the case, can't forget the dark eyes of the main suspect's daughter Yukiho (Maki Horikita) and the pawn shop owner's son Ryouji. ODORU DAISOUSASEN 3 Second sequel to the very popular police drama, "ODORU DAISOUSASEN" (BAYSIDE SHAKEDOWN). In the new film, star of the previous two, Yuji Oda, returns as the detective Shunsaku Aoshima, who has been promoted to section chief. Yuki Uchida plays Natsumi Shinohara, one of his skilled subordinates. She played the same character once before when she starred in a special episode of "Odoru Daisousasen" in 1998, but at the time the character was just a rookie cop.

OHOKU Based on a popular manga by Fumi Yoshinaga, the film is set in an alternate version of Japan in which a disease has drastically decreased the male population, turning the nation into a matriarchal society.

PATISSEERIE COIN DE RUE Tomura (Yosuke Eguchi) was once widely lauded as a legendary patissier, but some 8 years ago he inexplicably left the field. Since that time, Tomura has lectured at culinary schools and wrote a guidebook for pastry critics. Natsume (Yu Aoi) is a young woman who travels from Kagoshima to Tokyo to find her boyfriend. POKEMON 2010: PHANTOM RULER Z "POCKET MONSTERS DIAMOND & PEARL THE MOVIE: PHANTOM RULER Z" is a Pokémon anime movie, the 13th in the meta series franchise history and the fourth in the Diamond & Pearl series arc. It is set to be released in Japan on July 10, 2010. Celebi sees Raikou, Entei, and Suicune fighting in the future and in an attempt to prevent it, Celebi travels through time to the past.

RENAI GIKYOKU The film is an adaptation of playwright Shoji Kokami's hit stage play "Renai Gikyoku", and Kokami himself will direct. Kyoko Fukuda will play a popular television screenwriter named Mayumi Taniyama and actor Kippei Shiina will play a hapless producer named Mukai in his first purely comedic role. Taniyama is suffering from writer's block, so when Mukai enthusiastically asks her to write a script for him, she asks him to fall in love with her.

RAIOU Set during the Edo Period, a young man from a noble family meets a young woman under a special tree called "Raiou" (the tree was struck by lightning at one time with the broken part eventually sprouting out cherry blossoms). The young woman lived freely in the mountains after she was abducted as a young child. The couple soon fall in love under the Raiou tree, but are acutely aware of their different social positions & the ramifications it has on their relationship ...

SHIKEIDAI NO ELEVATOR Remake of 1958 French film "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud" (directed by Louis Malle) about self-assured business who man murders his employer, the husband of his adulterer, which unintentionally provokes an ill-fated chain of events.

SAKURADA MONGAI NO HEN Told through the vantage point of Mito domain samurai Seki Tetsunosuke (Takao Osawa), "Sakurada Mongai no Hen" depicts the assassination of Japanese Chief Minister Ii Naosuke by 17 Ronin Samurai of the Mito Domain. The assasination took place outside the Sakuradamon gate of Edo Castle on March 24, 1860.

THIRTEEN ASSASSINS A group of assassins come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord.

TOKYO-JIMA Based on an award-winning novel by Natsuo Kirino, the film stars Tae Kimura as Kiyoko, an ordinary 43- year-old housewife who gets stranded on an otherwise uninhabited island with 23 other people -- all of whom are young men. Island life is peaceful at first, and Kiyoko receives special treatment from the men around her. However, as more time passes, frustrations begin to mount and she decides to begin planning her escape.

TSUNAMI This film is about a tsunami that hits Haeundae Beach in Pusan, South Korea.

UMIZARU 3 Hideaki Ito is to again play the lead role of a Japanese coast guard rescue diver in a story that is a continuation of the popular "UMIZARU" franchise. Based on Shuho Sato's popular manga, "Umizaru" was adapted into a feature film in 2004 followed by a hit TV series with the same cast, in a reversal of the typical franchise path. This third film follows "UMIZARU 2: TEST OF TRUST" that was released to critical acclaim in 2006.
