Be Still, and Know That I Am God

St.St. John’sJohn’s MessengerMessenger Volume 91, Issue 05 www.stjohnslutherannorthumberland.com March 9, 2011 From The Pastor The Transfiguration is complete. We have seen the brilliant light that was Christ and heard the voice of God say once again that Jesus was His son, with whom he was well pleased, and telling us to “Listen to him!” And now we enter into Lent, the season that takes us through to the Holy Week Passion, the crucifixion, and finally to the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Throughout Lent we need a discipline of spiritual perseverance. For Lent does not bring the excited expectation Advent, or the joyous celebration of Christmas. It does not contain the unexpected discoveries of Epiphany. It is about making us see how sinful we are, the condition we have which only Christ can overcome. It is about forcing us to acknowledge our flaws when it comes to listening to Christ, and obeying God’s commandments. And no one likes to be reminded of such things. We want to be happy and celebrative all the time. But into our busy, active, and hectic lives comes the quiet voice of God that speaks to us in Psalm 46:10 saying:

“Be still, and know that I am God …”

It is why we worship, we say our prayers, we make our offering to God. God does not need these things from us, we need to bestow them upon Him for He is God. And so we need to persevere in the face of any and all circumstances that would drive us to do something other than worship regularly, pray often, and give our offering wisely. Now most people assume that perseverance is simply nothing more than endurance. Endurance is certainly the ability to bear prolonged testing, exertion, pain or hardship, but perseverance is more than that. It includes endurance, but along with it there must be the absolute certainty that what God promises and Christ speaks is going to happen. We are not to just hang around, waiting to see if it happens, as if we don’t really believe it, but just in case, here I am. This perseverance expected of us throughout this Lenten season includes a firm conviction that nothing can stop Jesus, or the Spirit he sent to be a part of us at our baptism. The Fruit of the Spirit will grow despite the communal atmosphere or the social climate. There will be love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. For the Spirit plants and the light of Christ that his followers receive by staying close to him enables it to grow.

Have you seen that poster picturing a kitten hanging on to a tree limb by his front paws and reading “Hang In There”? Well, that is not our Lenten discipline, just hanging on doing nothing. We are called to work diligently for the Lord with a trust that God will never be defeated. Because faith assures us and God promises the He protect all His faithful from the devastation that will befall the world:

“…because you have kept My command to persevere …” (Revelation 3:10).
