Research in Ecology 2003: Schedule for WEEK 1 (note: this weeks’ schedule is atypical, because we’re not in the field yet) Monday. June 23, 2003 Staff: Dr. Gaines, Dr. Krempels, All Undergraduate Facilitators. 7:15 to Staff: Dr. Gaines, Dr. Krempels, and All Undergraduate Facilitators (UFs). UFs set up table & chair with sign in Cox lobby. 8:00 AM: One UF accompanies Dr. Gaines to the MetroRail station at 7:30 a.m. with the ESC van. Two UFs wait for students at the MetroRail station, holding large SUMMER ECOLOGY sign. Van shuttles students until 8:00am. Two UFs welcome students at the table in the Cox lobby. As small groups accumulate, take them to SA110. Dr. Krempels and one UF stay in SA 110, receive students and distribute course materials: name tag spiral notebook field notebook pen & pencil week's syllabus Once all students have arrived (about 8:00 a.m.), put lobby table and chairs away and all staff go to SA 110. 8:05 AM: Take attendance. 8:15 AM: INTRODUCTION 1. Dr. Gaines introduces the staff. Each gives a brief statement about him/herself. 2. Dr. Gaines gives a brief introductory statement about the program. Go over rules and regulations with the students. 3. Students fill out team selection forms, return them to Dr. Krempels. 4. "Name Game." Participants pair up and tell a little about themselves to their partner. After 5 minutes, each student in turn tells the class about his/her partner (name, interests, etc.). 5. Students record their names, addresses and phone numbers in their books. 6. Brief Lecture: How to take class notes; what is to be recorded in the notebooks. 9:30 AM: Break 9:45 AM: Research Groups are announced. Groups rearrange into seating groups, meet together to introduce themselves, and write each others’ names and phone numbers in their notebooks. Choose Group Name! Discuss project topic among group members. 10:00 AM: 1. Groups announce their Group Name to the rest of the class. 10:15 AM: Groups go with their facilitators to an assigned location on campus with their disposable cameras. Each member takes TWO pictures of something interesting at the site, with the intention of asking a scientific question about what they photograph. Here are the LOCATIONS: Group 1: Lake Osceola Group 2: Gifford Arboretum Group 3: Gifford Native Biome 11:30 AM: UFs take students to U.M. pool for first day of swim testing. (Teachers remain with Dr. Krempels for Informational Meeting in SA 110) 12:30 PM: All groups arrive at the cafeteria for lunch. Leave cafeteria to be back in SA 110 by 1:45 PM 1:45 PM: Meet back in SA110 for group discussion: Hypothesis Collage. *Each student and teacher prints name clearly on a piece of paper with a bold marker pen. *Dr. Krempels takes out one group at a time to take individual pictures of course participants 2:45 PM: Pre-test in SA 145 3:45 PM: Groups meet to discuss poster to be made out of photos taken this morning. Groups will create posters tomorrow. 4:00 PM: UF’s collect name tags and stay with students until they are picked up at Cox. UF’s take other students to MetroRail Station. 4:30 pm: QUICK STAFF MEETING WITH DR. KREMPELS AND UNDERGRADUATE FACILITATORS. Tuesday. June 24, 2003 Staff: Dr. Gaines, Dr. Krempels, Ms. Burley, Ms. Pappas, Mr. Burgess, All UF’s. 8:00 am: Take attendance & hand out name tags. 8:10 am: Dr. Krempels lecture: The Scientific Method OBJECTIVE: Develop inquiring minds! Exercise 1: Slide Show and Story: The Mystery of the Glass Frogs 9:15 am: BREAK 9:25 am: ACTIVITY: Creating a collage of Hypotheses. Photos taken by each group are distributed to the group along with 1) large cardboard (big enough for 15 3" x 5" photos and titles) 2) miscellaneous art supplies Students make a collage of their photos from the day before, including a statement of their question/hypothesis along with each photo showing what inspired the question. 10:30 am: Scientific Writing with Ms. Burley 11:30 am: Swim testing continues at U.M. pool. 12:30 - 1:30: LUNCH 1:30 pm: Statistics with Ms. Pappas 2:20 pm: BREAK 2:30 pm: Computers with Mr. Burgess 3:00 pm: FINISH working on Hypothesis Collages 4:00 pm Homeward Bound

Wednesday. June 25, 2003 Staff: Dr. Krempels, Ms. Pappas, Mr. Burgess, Faculty Mentors, Grad Mentors, UF’s. 8:00 am: Take attendance & hand out name tags. 8:10 am: Dr. Krempels lecture: Lecture: Systematics and taxonomy OBJECTIVE: Develop notion of naming things and grouping them together in a logical manner. 9:20 am: BREAK 9:30 am: Exercise 1: Using a taxonomic key (Pasta-O-Rama) Exercise 2: Creating a taxonomic key (Hardware Wars) 10:30 am: Dr. Krempels will introduce the Faculty P.I. research mentors and the Graduate research mentors who will lead the groups. Each P.I. and Grad Mentor will meet with their group and UF to discuss the project(s) to come. 11:30 am: Swimming at UM pool 12:30 - 1:30 LUNCH pm: 1:30 pm: Statistics with Ms. Pappas 2:15 pm: BREAK 2:30 pm: Computers with Mr. Burgess 3:30 pm: Finish presenting phylogenetic trees of Hardware 4:00 pm Homeward Bound Thursday. June 26, 2003 Staff: Dr. Gaines, Dr. Krempels, Ms. Burley, Ms. Pappas, Mr. Burgess, All UF’s. 8:00 am: Take attendance & hand out name tags. 8:10 am: Dr. Krempels Lecture: Jumpin' Genotypes: Understanding inheritance. Introduction to the idea of genes and environment combining to affect phenotype. 9:15 am: BREAK 9:25 am: Choosing a Question to Ask about Butterfly Development 10:30 am: Scientific Writing: The Parts of a Scientific Paper 11:30 am: Swim testing continues at U.M. pool. 12:30 - 1:30: LUNCH 1:30 pm: Statistics with Ms. Pappas 2:20 pm: BREAK 2:30 pm: Computers with Mr. Burgess 3:50 pm: If there's time, continue with Hypothesis Collage Posters and FINISH them. 4:00 pm Homeward Bound

Friday. June 27, 2003 Staff: Dr. Krempels, All Faculty planning on going into the field with their groups today, All Graduate Facilitators, All UF’s.

8:00 am: Take attendance & hand out name tags. 8:00-8:15 Graduate facilitators prepare vans and equipment. a. Box lunches arrive between 8:00 - 8:15 am at the loading dock. Please be there to transfer the am: lunches (and the ice provided by Food Service) to our ice chests and water jugs. b. In SA 110 (freshman lab at the west side of Cox), the ice chest, water jug, first aid kit and folder with medical information on each group member have been arranged on the lab tables BY GROUP. Be sure you take the materials provided for YOUR OWN GROUP! c. Vans should be loaded and ready to go by 8:30am, but you’re on your own schedule. 8:30 am: Groups leave for field sites. 12:00 noon: LUNCH 1:00 pm: Continue field work 2:15 pm: BREAK 2:00 pm: Groups will either return from the field starting around this time, or remain in the field, if necessary. 2:15 pm: Groups meet in classroom to complete Hypothesis Collage posters 3:50 pm: Meet in SA 110 for daily wrap 4:00 pm Homeward Bound 4:20 pm Staff meeting in SA 110
