The Edinburgh Angus Club Spring and Summer Newsletter, 2011 After a frigid winter, it is encouraging to see snowdrops peeking through the ground, with the promise of Spring weather tantalising, although as your Secretary scribes this letter the wind is howling outside my study window, and the weather forecaster, a happily vivacious lady, is cheerily promising yet more snow. It makes you feel really good about climate warming. For your Secretary, a cardiologist to trade, it has been a highly educational experience to be on the receiving end of the NHS: a few weeks ago I had surgery for a new hip. Although one hears nothing but doom and gloom about the health service, usually on a slow news day or when politicians want to divert your attention from yet another political calamity, all that I experienced from the nursing and medical staff at Stracathro Hospital, by Brechin, was the most superlative care from genuinely dedicated staff. Maybe I was just fortunate but I enjoyed my stay as much as was possible. Last year’s Summer Reception and Awards Ceremony was reported in the Autumn Newsletter, and other than once again thanking Lord and Lady Fraser for their support, and thanks to the staff at Hospitalfield House, a hidden jewel in Arbroath, no more need be said. You will recall that the Governors and Members, in 2009, approved an additional Edinburgh Angus Club Award to a student in Further rather than Higher Education. The first such award was to a most deserving candidate at the Angus College, who was awarded sufficient funds for the purchase of a laptop computer to advance his career in design. It is confidently expected that this young man will progress in time to a University degree. The Lady Members have donated funds for future Lady Members Edinburgh Angus Club Awards; any lady member who wishes to support this award may make further donations; please note section (c) overleaf; such gifts will be acknowledged by the Lady Secretary. Some years ago, it was suggested that the Annual Dinner be held in Angus from time to time; initially every 5 years. Accordingly, the Annual Dinner in 2010 was held at the Panmure Golf Club Clubhouse, with the most magnificent support and encouragement from the Club Secretary and staff. The evening was very well supported, with some sixty members and partners attending; the success of the evening was underscored by a merry hubbub and by forceful suggestions that the dinner be held in Angus more often – that is, of course, a matter for the Governors and Members to decide. Several photographs were taken and can be viewed on the website [www.theedinburghangusclub.org.uk – thanks to our Webmaster; Dr Michael Gibson]. And, now – those dates for your diary, 2011. Please put these in NOW otherwise you might forget to attend, which would really never do. The Summer Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held at the Burn House, Edzell by kind permission of Goodenough College, London; the contact details are: - Mr David Wood, The Burn, Glenesk, Brechin, Angus DD9 7YP Telephone: 01356 648281 Fax: 01356 648078 Email: [email protected], on Saturday June 25 th 2011, at 3.00 pm, arriving from 2.30 pm. Experience has shown that our widely dispersed membership, often engaged in their professions, have had difficulty in attending the Annual General Meeting traditionally held at the New Club, Edinburgh, so again this year the Governors’ Meeting will be held at the Burn House, with the Annual General Members Meeting [AGM] held there also, at 1.45 pm; I hope that as many members as possible will support the Summer Reception and take the trouble to attend the AGM at 1.45 pm. Just drive through Edzell, over Gannochy Bridge and go past the blue door, then almost immediately turn left. The Annual Dinner for Members and their guests will be held at the New Club, Princes Street, Edinburgh on Friday November 11 th 2011, reception and drinks from 7.00 pm followed by dinner at 7.30 pm; carriages from 11.00 pm; dress formal and decorations may – and should – be worn. The booking is once more for the glorious Castle Room; if numbers exceed 42, then the main dining room. And finally; the more senior members of the Club will have noted that we have not enjoyed patronage since the death of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother: a decent interval having now intervened, the Governors are once again debating a suitable Patron.
