Setting (5 marks)

1. Write a very short description of one important setting covered in your novel thus far. Please refer to class notes on setting.

2. Choose two specific moments in your novel that describe this setting. You may choose to copy quotes or to paraphrase (summarize) specific moments in your own words. Remember to include page numbers for both quotes and paraphrases.

3. Describe the context of each quote or paraphrase. Briefly describe what was happening in the novel when this quote or paraphrase occurs. You must answer, in a sentence or two, a few who, what, where and when questions. 4. Explain the significance of this setting to the novel. To do this correctly, you must think deeply about why the author choose to include descriptions of this particular setting. Please refer to class note “Significance of Setting.”

Style (3 marks)

1. Style: What is the narrative technique? Is the narrator a first or third person narrator? Is the narrator a major character or not? Comment on how the story is told (is there flashback, use of letters or diaries for example?) Are there specific images or symbols that already seem significant?

2. What is the author’s main tone in the novel so far? Find a quote that reveals this tone. Finally, clearly explain how this quote reveals the emotion or attitude of the author. Be sure to refer to your notes on tone.

Theme (5 marks)

Suggest a possible theme for your novel and prove it using specific moments from the storyline. It is very important that you:

1. Create an appropriate theme statement for your novel. You must be sure to follow all of the rules for theme outlined in the photocopies handed out in class. As well, please refer to class note.

2. Prove your theme with five specific moments from the novel. You may choose to copy quotes or to paraphrase (summarize) specific moments in your own words.

3. Describe the context of each quote or paraphrase. You must answer, in a sentence or two, a few who, what, where and when questions. Briefly describe what was happening in the novel when this quote or paraphrase occurs. 4. This time, you must also explain how each of these specific moments contributes to proving your theme. In this explanation, you must create a clear link between this specific moment and the theme statement.

1. On a page by itself, create a formal Works Cited page. Since this is not a research project, the only source you will need is your novel.
