Any ELS book is eligible for exchange; i.e. if they have an ELS date label, there is no restriction on the balance between fiction and non-fiction; paperback and hardback. Schools will be notified by email a month in advance of their visit and a postcard sent two weeks later. Service 2 – Topic Box Loans Topic Boxes are borrowed for a term and are ordered via the online order form on our website. They are delivered to schools by courier during the first full week of term, and collected during the penultimate week.

There is no longer a limit to the number of boxes you can borrow in each category, rather an overall limit of boxes that you can borrow from us each term. This limit is based on the number of FTE pupils at your school, as below:

Number of Number of Topic Boxes per Term pupils FTE <100 pupils 12 101-150 14 151-200 16 201-250 18 251-300 20 301-350 22 351-400 24 401-450 26 451-500 28 501-550 30 551-600 32

ELS has 5 different types of topic boxes for loan.

 Project boxes (pink boxes) contain 20 mainly non-fiction books, on a particular curriculum area.  Pick & Mix box. (Blue boxes) This is a customised box of up to 20 titles on topics not covered by the project loan (pink box) service. Due to capacity, only 1 Pick & Mix box may be ordered per school per term. Please try and order your P&M box at least 6 weeks in advance as we may need to purchase specific books for your request.  Fiction boxes (green boxes) contain 2 sets of group readers and 12 individual titles.  Language boxes (green boxes) in French and Spanish.  Artefact boxes (museum loans) contain a range of items on a theme, e.g African Masks. They are great for art lessons, subject based lessons and display. Most items are robust, so may be handled with care by the pupils.

Also available to borrow are Stuffed mammals and birds, excellent for art and nature studies. These are too delicate to be handled by pupils

Schools that have missed the deadline for ordering via the website may collect boxes from ELS at Threemilestone once all online orders have been satisfied. Schools can also visit the base once all orders have been satisfied to select additional boxes on top of their entitlement or to exchange those which they had ordered online.

Advice is provided on development plans, recognised guidelines, management and stock provision, design and planning of new library areas and other relevant library issues.
