Dear Parent or Guardian,
In the course of our study of World War II, one of the areas we are focusing on is the Holocaust. As we study this historical period, we will be using a variety of literature and media to illustrate the events of that time. The recent film Schindler’s List will be shown during class. The film is based upon the true story of the German businessman, Oskar Schindler, who saved more than 1100 Jews from Nazi death camps by employing them in his factories during World War II.
Our objectives in using the film are: To provide historical background on the Holocaust. To bring some of the moral and ethical questions raised by the Holocaust into sharp focus. To illustrate, through the examples of Oskar Schindler, that every individual has the inner potential to make a difference. To underscore the moral legacy of the Holocaust and the relevance of that legacy today.
Viewing this film will be a powerful educational experience. Since the film is rated R, you may not wish to have your son/daughter view it. In that case, he/she will be given an appropriate alternative library research assignment to complete while the class is viewing the film. If you do not wish to have your son/daughter see this film, please check the appropriate line and sign your signature at the bottom of this page. If you do wish to have your son/daughter see this film, check the appropriate line and sign your signature at the bottom of this page. Either way, have your student return the signed paper to Ms. Morales their World History teacher.
I will be showing the movie beginning ____May 3, 2013______. If you would like to join your student’s class when we see the film, you are welcome.
Sincerely,
Alicia Morales History/Social Science Dept.
