31 December 2014 - Coach Walks Update (amended item)

The coach is going to Masham, North Yorkshire on Sunday 18 January 2015. Details of the A and B Walks can be seen in the Coach Walks section and the C walk is still in the pipeline. Your leaders put in a lot of effort to find interesting walks in areas away from the trainline. Please do book and show your support and enjoy a good day out with your group. No doubt there will be time to call in at Masham brewery? We need support for the coach for it to continue. Make this your New Year resolution!

REMINDER: Until further notice, please make any bookings for this or future coach trips via Penny Lucas - Tel: 0113 237 0179

15 December 2014 - Report from the Knaresborough "Coach"

The C walk...very exclusive had a lovely day out round Knaresborough followed by a meal in the Crown. The A and B group met in Harewood and walked together...four lady leaders leading five men! Both walks had good weather and good views all day - the A and B making their way to Spofforth Castle ruins for lunch, along Crimple Beck admiring the millstone grit rock formations and on to Plumpton Rocks ending up at Knaresborough Castle. We had an enjoyable day and enjoyed good company. Thank you to all who lead and to all who turned out.

10 December 2014 - Coach Walk Update for Sunday 14 December (amended item)

The members' Knaresborough Coach has been cancelled because of low numbers. All the walks have been recced and will go ahead - please see the Coach Walks section for the route descriptions and the walks sketch map.

The C walk is circular from Knaresborough rail station and those intending to be on this walk should meet at Knaresborough rail station at 10.57 from the 09.54 train from Leeds. This train calls at Harrogate at 10.31, departs at 10.48. If anyone prefers to park at Moortown rather than go into Leeds, then they should catch the no. 36 bus from there at 9.25 to Harrogate bus station and join the train.

The B walk will start from Harewood Bridge, catching the 09.10 no. 36 Ripon bus from Leeds bus station. This bus can be joined at Moortown Corner at 09.25 * The A walk will start from Harewood from the 09.10 no. 36 Ripon bus from Leeds bus station and can be joined at Moortown Corner at 09.25 *

All three walks finish in Knaresborough and leave from the railway station back either to Harrogate to catch the no. 36 bus to Moortown or to Leeds railway station.

* A and B walks: If anyone chooses to drive to Harewood and park there.... (outside the village Hall on Church Lane?) the no. 36 bus arrives at Harewood at 09.35 and at Harewwod Bridge at 09.40 and they should wait at the bus stop for the leaders to arrive!

If anyone should like advice about parking from the ringroad to catch the no. 36 bus either at St John's church or Moortown Corner they should ring Diane Taylor on 0113 293 1924. Please continue to check the website or ring Diane nearer the time, as the A and B walks may amalgamate.

4 December 2014 - Coach Walk Update (amended item)

Please see the Coach Walks section for details of all three walks for the next members' coach trip to Knaresborough, North Yorkshire on Sunday 14 December 2014. Please ring Penny Lucas or Diane Taylor to book a place. Numbers booked are currently low, so it may be necessary to change the arrangements. If so, details will be available here online from 8 December or by phone from Diane.

PAST EVENTS

A selection of photos from the members' holiday to Ambleside Youth Hostel earlier this month can now be seen in the Past Events (Holidays 2014) section. 26 September 2014 - Coach Walks Update

A message from the Events Secretary (Diane Taylor):

The coach to Arkholme was cancelled as only 14 booked though this was added to at the last moment. Eleven people went by train to Wennington where the A and B leaders combined their walk and in glorious sunshine made their way through Roeburndale to Hornby passing through the delightful village of Wray where lunch was eaten sitting on the cobble mosaic made to commemorate the millennium. From Hornby we followed the Lune to Loyn Bridge and then over the tops via Tatham to Wennington and its delightful pub. It was very disappointing more people did not book for Arkholme and explore this beautiful area. Thank you to the leaders for their efforts and to those who came to walk. We had an excellent day with excellent company!

The next coach is to Leyburn and Wensleydale. Please put the date, Sunday October 12th, in your diaries and ring to book a place. If it is easier you could email Lynn or myself. Two of the recces have been done and details are in the Coach Walks section; the third will appear shortly. Please support your coach. All the destinations were suggested by yourselves and Leyburn is in the heart of a popular area. Lynn and I are looking at the suggestions for the programme for next year. We hope September was just a glitch and October will be properly supported. If we don't use it we will lose it. The coach walks enable all three grades of walkers to get together and the craic is always good.

Please don't leave booking till the last minute, as we have to make a decision on whether the coach is viable at least a week before. Thanks for your support!

31 May 2014 - Train Walks Update for Saturday 7 June 2014

GRASSINGTON TO KETTLEWELL VIA GREAT WHERNSIDE (MODERATE WALK) BUS OUT FROM AND BACK TO SKIPTON

Please note this walk will now be from the 0819 Leeds to Morecambe train

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE LEADER (STUART) -

This walk is the epitome of the ever popular ‘Climb a Peak Slowly’ walks.

Unfortunately, because of the new unfavourable bus schedule, we have to do the walk in the opposite direction to that originally envisaged. This means that the route will be more challenging, since the ‘up hill’ walk to conquer the 704 m Peak includes a couple of steep, but short ascents, the second of which is a 30 minute off-piste climb up the flank of the hill.

The rest of the walk, from summit down to Kettlewell descends 500 m in 4 km, with a short but steep well-trodden scree section.

To enjoy the walk to the full and experience the beauty of the scenery along this high level walk, it seems prudent to consider ‘a possible late train return’.

REMINDER

Walkers (especially those under pensionable age) may save money on the overall travel costs by purchasing a combined bus/rail ticket called a Dales Rambler. This is a flat rate ticket priced at £11.00 (adult) and is valid for a day trip to the Dales from Leeds and Bradford and all stations on the Airedale and Wharfedale railway lines.

Dales Rambler Tickets include a journey by Northern Rail to Ilkley or Skipton, then unlimited travel on any of these DalesBus services, returning by train from either station:

- 72, 72R, 871, 872 between Skipton, Grassington, Hebden, Kettlewell and Buckden - 74, 800, 874 between Ilkley, Grassington, Kettlewell and Buckden - 75, 875 between Bolton Bridge, Skipton and Malham (Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays only) - 873 between Ilkley, Skipton and Malham (Sundays and Bank Holidays only)

Dales Rambler Tickets are priced as follows - Adult: £11.00; Child: £5.50; Railcard: £7.25; Family: £23.00

Additional information from the leader (Philip):

The meeting point is Huddersfield Rail Station, from where we plan to catch the 1013 Huddersfield-Sheffield train to Shepley. 30 January 2014 - Coach Walks Update

A message from the Events Secretary (Diane Taylor):

Sunday February 16th Coach to the Dark Peak Area centred round Penistone.

This is a stunning area in the North Peak District bordering on our own county. The A walk will be following some of the Penistone boundary walk and be about 14 miles. The B walk will head off from Penistone towards Langsett Reservoir and visit the delightful village of Midhopestones with its Shepherds chapel (11 miles). The C party will start at Langsett and also visit Midhopestones. All three groups will finish at Cubley Hall on the outskirts of Penistone, a seventeenth century hostlery serving tea, coffee and ales. Further details of the walks to follow when I have received them!

Thank you to all who came to Pateley Bridge and made it the successful day it was...We had a beautiful day out and well done the leaders. Please send your bookings to Penistone to Lynn (or Penny) as soon as possible...or Diane if you don't reach either!

28 January 2014 - Train Walk Update for Saturday 1 February (Carnforth to Arnside moderate walk)

Additional information from the leader (Jack W):

As the field path to Warton is waterlogged, virtually impassable, the walk leader plans to use a bus for this short section. Trust this is acceptable to particpants.

22 January 2014

The January 2014 newsletter has now been published and is currently being distributed to members by post and email. The online version of the previous edition (October 2013) can now be downloaded and viewed from the Newsletter section. 21 January 2014 - Coach Walks Update

A message from the Events Secretary (Diane Taylor):

Sunday Parking charges in Leeds centre are £4 up to 4pm and £2 after that, making £6 for parking for the Sunday Coach Walks. While there is some free parking (until the council realises it missed these streets!) in Mab Gate off Regent Street and on Shannon Street off the A64 near the Woodpecker Pub, not everyone would want to leave their car in these areas. So from February 2014, there will be an additional pickup from the Park and Ride Carpark on King Lane, Alwoodley on the north side of the ring road. The post code is LS17 7AG and it is clearly signed on the ring road at the roundabout for Sainsburys Moor Allerton. It will be very quick from Pudsey to here as both are on the ring road. For February, there are likely to be pickups at Pudsey, Alwoodley, Leeds and Wooley Edge.

14 January 2014 - Train Walk Update for Saturday 18 January - Bingley to Ilkley strenuous walk

Additional information from the leader (Alan K):

This walk closely follows the 3rd leg of The Stanza Stones Poetry Trail from Marsden to Ilkley of some 47 miles via Hebden Bridge and Bingley. For more information, please click here (external website link). On the final part of the walk near Backstone Beck we shall pass the Stanza Stones Poetry Seat where any of you budding poets can post a poem or two, nothing of value though !!

From the start of the walk at Bingley station and along the Leeds - Liverpool canal there are no toilets in a convenient location, it will be about 1hr 15mins before suitable cover is available, you have been warned.

13 January 2014 (amended item)

The walks sketch map and leaders' route descriptions for all three walks from the members' coach trip to Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire on Sunday 19 January 2014 can now be seen in the Coach Walks section.

5 January 2014 - Coach Walks Update for 19 January (amended item)

A message from the Events Secretary (Diane Taylor):

The January Coach is to Nidderdale, an area of outstanding natural beauty and an area we have always enjoyed walking in. Please book your coach places via Penny Lucas or Diane Taylor as Lynn is away for the month. Coach leaders put in considerable effort devising interesting routes and the January walks are no exception. Please support your leaders and get back into the coach habit. Details of the B and C routes are now available in the Coach Walks section. 3 January 2014 - Thursday Walks Update

Please remember that in January the Thursday walk is on the 2nd Thursday (9th January). It is a moderate walk with very little ascent and lots of historical interest. If you intend to travel by bus from Leeds you need to be aware that the number 64 bus often runs late.

Further details of this walk can be found in the Members section.
