424 – Honors Spanish IV Credit - 1.00 Junior & Senior Weighted Grading In the fourth year of Spanish, students strive to perfect their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students are encouraged to use Spanish in the classroom unless a grammatical explanation or concept is being presented. They are required to take oral proficiency tests, present skits, read short stories, magazines, poetry, etc. and to critique in Spanish. In addition, students will use the language to respond to those items both orally and in writing. To qualify for the fourth year of Spanish, the student must have acquired an average of 85% or above in Spanish II and III and with teacher recommendation. In addition, the Summer Assignment must be completed by the due date assigned in order to complete this course. I. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
DO be respectful at all times. Only positive and appropriate conversation is permitted at all times. DO be respectful of my classroom. Please do not touch anything that is not yours such as any technological equipment including the projector, cabinets, file cabinet, thermostat or teacher’s desk. DO arrive on time. Tardiness is unacceptable. Students are to be seated and ready to begin class BEFORE the second bell. If you arrive late to class without a valid written excuse from a teacher, you will receive a pink slip. ALL POLICIES IN THE STUDENT HANDBOOK APPLY IN THIS CLASSROOM.
II. CHEATING/PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism: the use of another’s words or ideas and the presentation of them as though they are entirely ones own.
Types of Plagiarism in Foreign Language: 1) Google Translate. It is not YOUR work. Take the time to use a Spanish/English dictionary or see me.
2) Copying homework. Yes, it is also plagiarism! Students who willingly copy and/or provide other students access to their work are plagiarizing.
3) On-line translation sites. Once again, it is not YOUR work. Take the time to use a Spanish/English dictionary or see me.
Cheating: looking at another’s work/test/quiz, using a “cheat-sheet”, basically not doing work on your OWN merit.
If you are suspected of any of the above, you will have consequences as outlined in the student handbook and myself.
DON’T COPY OR CHEAT! RESPECT YOUR WORK. RESPECT YOURSELF. RESPECT OTHERS. I am willing to help, be proactive and ask for help as soon as you feel unsure.
III. CLASS REQUIREMENTS The following are expected daily for class or points will be deducted each time:
A single subject notebook, specifically for Spanish class ONLY! Spanish/English Dictionary*-whether used daily or not. DO NOT ASK IF WE WILL “need our dictionary today.” ASSUME YOU WILL. (*Since textbooks will not be carried daily, your Spanish/English dictionary will act as your text.) Writing Utensils including highlighters if you prefer Spanish Folder(s) Handouts Spanish Journal (to be completed during class and kept in 3020) IV. GRADING-Grading is determined by points earned on the following criteria:*** Classwork Tests/Quizzes Homework Citizenship/Participation Summer Work ***Ultimately, you are responsible for your grade in this class. Check Power School often or see me and I will be glad to check your grade any time. At no time should you be surprised by your grade.
A. GRADING-CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK
1. Tests/Quizzes: Written tests and quizzes are given often since learning a language takes time and practice. The tests and quizzes are counted towards your grade. In addition, oral proficiency exams, written exams and project(s) will be given to evaluate language mastery. A final exam will be taken at the end of the year by juniors and those seniors who do not earn an overall 93% for the entire year. 2. Homework : There will be homework. It may or may not be given daily. It may be checked or reviewed in class. If it is graded and you do not have your homework complete, it will be recorded as a zero each time it is not done. Homework, when collected is due when it is collected, not after. IT IS LATE!!! Any homework not turned in as it is being collected will receive an immediate two-point deduction if turned in anytime after during that period. Stay organized. 3. Late Work : In an Honors Level class, late work is not accepted…period! 4. Classwork/Independent Evaluations : A few times during a lesson, I may have you complete a homework assignment/journal entry in class or an Independent Evaluation so as to see if you are mastering the material. It will be graded. Each evaluation will be graded for accuracy and done independently (unless told otherwise in class). You will be permitted to use your OWN materials and ask me questions.
B. GRADING-CLASS PARTICIPATION/CITIZENSHIP
Learning a second language requires practice and frequent use of the language. Pronunciation, fluency, and fluidity improve with every effort you make to use the language. So, each student will begin each class with two points, one for each of the following.
1. Class Participation: In an Honors Level language class you MUST participate. That includes but is not limited to: arriving ON TIME and PREPARED for class with ALL materials (including YOUR OWN dictionary), homework completed, actively listening, taking notes, participating in the lesson, asking questions, making eye contact, basically being involved in the class. If your head is down, you are working on other work or basically just existing during class is NOT participation.
2. Citizenship: (Citizenship means having Compassion for others, Respect for yourself, Responsibility for your work, Courage to participate and make good decisions and Honesty in everything you do.) That includes but is not limited to properly behaving in class, not making negative comments towards others or myself, doing things the FIRST time you are asked and basically being kind.
One or both of your daily points will be lost if you choose not to follow both of the above. Extra Credit is not given on an individual basis. Opportunity to earn extra credit is available on tests/quizzes.
IV. ABSENTEE POLICY
In this class you are responsible for getting make up work/tests when you are absent. Check the Absentee Bin in my room. You can also check the blog for missing work or to download notes. Failure to make-up any missing work/tests past the due date assigned will result in a zero for the assignment and citizenship points. Check your school email often!
V. EXTRA HELP
