The successful applicant will become part of an enthusiastic and creative Food and Textiles department of 4 teachers and 2 support staff. An interest in food and textiles, and the ability to use a sewing machine and would be an advantage but are not essential.

Vacancy: Food and Textiles Technician September 2016

Job title: Food and Textiles Technician Responsible to: Head of Food and Textiles

Main purpose of role: As a member of our small team, you will provide support for the teachers in this very busy Food and Textiles Department. You will be expected to assist the other members of the team to cover the daily requirements for 4 teaching rooms, as requested by the teaching staff. You will receive whatever training may be required to fulfil the key responsibilities below.

Key responsibilities:  Preparing rooms and equipment (including cutting out fabric and weighing ingredients) for lesson practicals and assessments  Putting equipment/computer trolley into the classrooms prior to class and collecting after  General department housekeeping, including using the dishwasher and tumble dryer, wiping down work surfaces after practical lessons, returning stock to stock cupboards/shelves in the prep room  Photocopying and collating worksheets and tests which complement the schemes of work  Assisting in the monitoring of various department consumables  Maintaining equipment for use in food and textiles lessons  Maintaining the sewing machines e.g. winding bobbins, changing sewing needles etc.  Communicating telephone messages to students/teachers when the need arises; and  Any other duties as specified by the senior staff.

Knowledge: knowledge and practical ability in food preparation and textiles would be an advantage but is not essential.

Experience: Basic ICT competency.

Skills and competencies: To be able to:  multi-task  act quickly  work well within the team  prioritise workload; and  be flexible. ∙

The Food and Textiles Department At Dame Alice Owen’s School, Food and Textiles holds an important place in our broad and balanced curriculum allowing students the opportunity to develop practical lifelong skills and knowledge in a stimulating and creative environment. We are a small and friendly department with 4 teachers and 2 support staff.

Examination results are excellent and students have the opportunity to study Food and Textiles at GCSE and Textiles at A level.

The Food and Textiles department comprises 2 purpose-built kitchens, which can each accommodate 20 students, 2 textiles rooms, a prep room and a staff work room.

The Food and Textiles Department has extensive schemes of work, which are very highly resourced to support the learning needs of students. Food and Textiles are very popular

Page 5 of 6 subjects in the school thanks to the high quality of teaching and learning and the opportunities provided within the Department.

Teaching Programme

At Key Stage 3, students are timetabled for one lesson each week. They will spend half of the year studying Textiles and half of the year studying Food.

At Key Stage 4, pupils have the opportunity to opt for Food or Textiles GCSE with a small number of students choosing both subjects.

At Sixth Form level, Textiles is a popular subject with many of our students continuing to study Fashion and Textiles at university.
