MICHIGAN METABOLOMIC AND OBESITY CENTER MICHIGAN NUTRITION AND OBESITY RESEARCH CENTER Instructions and Application for 2010-2011 Pilot/Feasibility Grant

Due Date: 5 PM, Tues., August 31, 2010

PURPOSE

The purpose of the MNORC Pilot /Feasibility (P/F) Grant Program is to promote research on the biological and behavioral determinants of obesity, and to develop interventions to reduce obesity and its disease sequelae using basic, clinical, or population approaches. The P/F program’s aim is to enable both new and established University of Michigan investigators to generate sufficient preliminary information for a successful application for major research funding from NIH or other national granting agencies.

Grant proposals may be in areas of basic biomedical research or in clinical, epidemiological, or translational research, e.g. interventions in clinical or population-based setting. Animal or human models may be considered. Grant proposals involving cross-disciplinary expertise, Faculty from different UM schools, and that utilize the core laboratories of the MNORC are especially encouraged.

The MNORC 2010-2011 Call for Proposals aims to foster research addressing key questions in the areas of:

Pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, or control of obesity, its complications or related endocrine or metabolic disorders (for example: counter-regulatory proteins, obesity, metabolic syndrome), neuro- peptides which may control eating behavior, adipose tissue biology, gut flora influence on nutrient absorption and cellular functions related to energy utilization.

Translational research projects are encouraged and should focus on the translation of research advances into clinical practice or population-based interventions related to obesity, and include the identification of barriers to widespread adoption of new science and the testing of interventions to overcome these barriers.

ELIGIBILITY

Individuals who have full-time instructional or research faculty positions at the University of Michigan are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators of P/F proposals. Eligible applicants are: a) new investigators beginning careers in research on nutrition and obesity; b) established investigators in areas of biomedical research who wish to focus their expertise on nutrition, obesity and related areas; or c) established nutritional sciences or obesity investigators who wish to take an entirely new direction from their usual work. This new direction cannot be an extension or outgrowth of research currently being undertaken by the applicant.

Successful applicants who receive funding will be required to acknowledge the MNORC funding (P30 DK089503) on all resultant publications, as well as reporting periodically on progress and attending the MNORC Annual Symposium to present the results of the funded project.

APPLICATIONS

Proposals should request one year of support in direct costs, with requested funding up to $50,000. P/F funds may not be applied to salary support for the Principal Investigator or other Faculty, travel expenses (except as related to project research) or purchase of equipment (i.e., durable items costing over $5000). Indirect costs are not provided for MNORC P/F grants.

Submit the names and contact information for two potential reviewers of your proposal with expertise in relevant areas addressed by the research and no conflict of interest. At least 1 of the potential reviewers should be outside the University of Michigan. Each proposal will receive peer review by experts and internal review by the P/F Advisory Committee of the MNORC. It is anticipated that P/F projects that receive a favorable review will be notified by December 15, 2010 and funded by December 31, 2010.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cover letter- all applications must be accompanied by a cover letter that lists the name of the applicant and the title of the proposal. The cover letter must also list the names, title, affiliations (department, institution), contact information (including email address and telephone numbers). The cover letter must be submitted electronically in a Word or PDF format file separate from the body of the application. A signature is not required.

Application- The application has been revised to more closely reflect the current NIH electronic format. All portions (except the cover letter, above) should be converted to .pdf format and compiled into a single file for submission. Signatures are required on the original hard copy of the face page, but are not required on the electronic .pdf version. The final .pdf version should contain the last name of the PI in the upper right hand corner of every page, and all pages should be numbered sequentially in the bottom right-hand corner. A. Face page (Form pages 1-2). Fill out the attached pages with all relevant information. Original signatures are required on one hard copy of the application, but not in the .pdf version of the document. B. Abstract- maximum 250 words. C. Detailed budget for direct costs. Fill out the attached budget page. P/F funds may not be used for salary support for the Principal Investigator, travel expenses, or equipment. D. Budget justification. Insert a single page justifying under separate headings the costs for Personnel, Supplies, Other Expenses, and Patient Care Costs. E. Biographical Sketch. Insert the current NIH format Biosketch for the PI and other Key Personnel (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms.htm). Adhere to NIH page limits. F. Research Plan. Using the pages provided, give a detailed plan of the proposed research. The scope of the research plan should match the limited size and duration of a P/F project. Suggested lengths of each section are shown below. The total length of sections F1-F5 must not exceed 10 pages. The application should be prepared using Arial 11 point font with margins of at least 0.5 inches all around. A RESEARCH PLAN THAT EXCEEDS THE PAGE LIMITS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED. F1. Specific Aims- One (1) page. F2. Significance and Innovation. One (1) page suggested. This section must contain a clear explanation of the relevance of the proposed project to NUTRITION/OBESITY. It will be a key factor (in addition to scientific merit) influencing whether an award will be made. F3. Plans for Future Funding of the Project. One-half (1/2) page. Assuming that this P/F grant has a positive outcome, explain in detail HOW the results obtained will serve as the basis for an application for major research funding from NIH or other national granting agencies. Please note simply stating that the results obtained will be used to apply for a grant (or other words to that effect) is insufficient. F4. Preliminary Work by Applicant. One (1) page. F5. Experimental Design. Five (5) pages suggested. Established methods may be referenced rather than described in detail. F6. References. (No Limit) G. Resources. Insert one (1) page detailing the resources available for the completion of the proposed project, including: Laboratory, Clinical, Animal, Computer, Office, Other, and listing of Major Equipment.
