What is the Elon Academy?
The Elon Academy is a multi-year college preparatory academic enrichment program for academically talented high school students in Alamance County who have a financial need and/or no family history of college. The year-round program combines three intensive four-week residential experiences at Elon University in the summers prior to the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades with a variety of academic, enrichment and college planning activities during the school year. Elon Academy continues to provide support for scholars through college graduation.
What is the Goal of the Elon Academy?
To engage scholars in challenging curricular, co-curricular, and cultural experiences to ensure that they get the essential resources that they need to lead productive, fulfilling lives. This will include the interpersonal skills and sense of self-worth that will position them to succeed in institutions of higher education and to become active members of and leaders in their communities and beyond.
What is the role of the Elon Academy CAT or Senior CAT Mentor?
All Elon Academy CAT Mentors are current Elon University students. Elon Academy mentors serve as role models for the Elon Academy scholars through interaction inside and outside of organized programming. Elon Academy mentors conduct a minimum of three individualized face-to-face meetings with scholars per semester, serve as assistants during the once monthly Saturday Programs, and keep Elon Academy Administrative Staff informed about student success and challenges via online reporting and regularly scheduled meetings. CAT Mentors are typically assigned anywhere from six to eight scholar mentees. CAT Mentors are paid at a starting rate of $9 per hour. Additionally, CAT Mentors are reimbursed for any gas or food purchases made in support of their role as a CAT Mentor.
