Miniatures Workshops! MasterWorks 2009

April 15 th , Susan Brooke: International award winning artist and 2009’s MasterWorks Miniatures Judge Susan Brooke will present “The World of Miniatures” using acrylics. “I will spend the morning with a demo on acrylics, all the tricks and techniques that I know using this media, along with tricks I have learned both from Robert Bateman and Jan Martin McGuire, both know for their acrylic paintings. Along with the demo I will be giving each student handouts on what I am teaching, what I use, and where I get my supplies. I will also cover miniature art shows, which I find to be excellent, what I have learned the judges are considering important, and how to paint to sell and win at a miniature show. Midday I will take everyone’s name for a drawing for one of my original miniature works. The remaining part of the day will be spent with the class working with acrylic. If a person is not an acrylic painter and simply wants to learn what and how, I will explain this in detail.”

April 16 th , Margy O’Brien: National award winning and widely exhibited nature artist Margy O’Brien will present “Drawing On Nature”, rendering details in plants and animals. “A nature journal is a place for being attentive to the natural world, using writing and sketching to record observations. It is a valuable tool for artists, gardeners, scientists, journalers, and anyone who wants to know more about the world around them. I will show and talk about my own sketchbooks, do a demo, and offer guidelines to get started in the morning. After a break, participants will fill pages in their own journals inspired by natural objects – guided by various teaching prompts. Bring: sketchbook, pencils, pens, and any color media such as colored pencils or watercolor if desired. I will also bring some materials for sharing.”

April 17 th , Paul Murray: National award winning pastel and acrylic artist Paul Murray will present “Light Work, Heavy Results: Working with Light in Pastel”, a one- day workshop. Paul will do a miniature demo in pastel in the morning, and guide students after a lunch break. He will share his “cheap tricks” in painting small scale pastels, with emphasis on light and composition. Students should bring their own materials and any reference photos from which to work.”
