AP English Language and Composition Self-Assessment for First Semester 2016-2017

Instructions:

Step 1: Review the Assignment View screen from StudentVue.

Step 2: Carefully read the comments.

Step 3: Component 1 - Engagement and Scholarly Mind-Set

Growth Narrative Reflect on the goals you set at the end of first quarter pertaining to your engagement and scholarly mindset in class. Examples might be (but are not limited to) large and small group seminar, partner work, group work and outside preparation for class. Use the criteria in “The Core Principles of AP English Language and Composition” handout to articulate your growth. Give specific examples of ways that you have grown in the two criteria you chose to internalize during the remainder of the semester. Be specific about how exactly you have worked to internalize the qualities in these areas.

Goal Narrative Going forward to Semester 2, name two criteria you are going to work on internalizing, why you have chosen them, and how you plan to achieve growth in these areas.

Step 4: Component 2 – Skills

Growth Narrative - Reflect on your mastery of skills by looking at two examples from your portfolio. The first example should be evidence of your initial ability in that area. The second example should be evidence of your current ability in that area.

Examples might include analytical assignments (e.g., Notice and Focus + Ranking, “The Method”), vocabulary assignments, writing assignments, sample AP multiple-choice cross sections, etc.

Remember that whatever two samples you choose should display the difference between your initial ability level and your current ability level in a skill (e.g., writing, reflection, reading, vocabulary, or test taking). Use the feedback you have received from me, my student helpers, and prior self-assessments to inform your reflection.

In your reflection, you must use textual evidence from your samples to support your claims about your developed mastery of said skills.

Goal Narrative - Going forward, identify skills you still need to develop and ways you plan to achieve growth in these areas.

Step 5: Semester Grade

After having written your growth and goal narratives for first semester, take some time to reflect upon your overall achievement during first semester and determine a grade for yourself.

Write an explanation for the grade. Make sure to provide plenty of evidence from StudentVue and/or written commentary on assignments to support your claim. Do your best to support your claim fully. Your preparation is paramount; therefore, you should take great pride in typing your work neatly and using textual evidence from your work to support your claims about your current abilities and growth. This will be a major assessment piece that will be taken into consideration when determining your semester grade.

1. All responses should be typed, with the component number as a heading for each section and “Growth Narrative” and “Goal Narrative” as subheadings. 2. Create a separate heading entitled “Semester Grade” for the final step.
