Fire Hydrant Maintenance Policy

Inspection a) The Public Works Department will inspect and service all District of Logan Lake fire hydrants twice annually. 1) A Service 2) B Service b) The Public Works Department will inspect and service all District of Logan Lake fire hydrants after use by the Fire Department or any other organization given permission to draw water from hydrants. c) If in the course of other duties Public Works Department personnel observe fire hydrant defects they will report them to the Public Works Superintendent who will arrange for the inspection of the defect. d) Where the public reports a fire hydrant defect to the Public Works Department or any other department of the District of Logan Lake, they will report them to the Public Works Superintendent who will arrange for an inspection of the defect.

Recording a) Defects found after the annual inspection or reported by Public Works Personnel and the Public shall be recorded in the Fire Hydrant Maintenance Record program at the Public Works Yard.

Action a) After inspecting a fire hydrant defect, the Public Works Department shall prescribe an appropriate remedy in a reasonable period of time given the nature of the defect, demand on available manpower, equipment and financial resources. b) The Public Works Department shall notify the Fire Department anytime a fire hydrant is taken out of service and when service has been re-instated. c) The Public Works Department will flush and service hydrants twice annually during which time the hydrant will be inspected for defects. DISTRICT OF LOGAN LAKE HYDRANT PROCEDURE'S HYDRANT (A) SERVICE

1. CHECK TO MAKE SURE HYDRANT IS OFF WITH HYDRANT WRENCH

2. ATTACH ISOLATING VALVE WITH GAUGE TO HYDRANT'S 2 1/2 INCH PORT

3. TURN HYDRANT FULLY OPEN WITH ISOLATING VALVE CLOSED, TO CHECK FOR LEAKS AT PORTS, TOP END AND DRAIN SYSTEM

4. LOCATE HYDRANT BRANCH VALVE, CLEAN OUT IF REQUIRED, THEN SHUT DOWN VALVE

5. RELEASE PRESSURE FROM ISOLATING VALVE

6. DISASSEMBLE HYDRANT, CHECKING PARTS FOR FLAWS OR WEARING

7. REPLACE PARTS SUCH AS O-RINGS, CRACKED BRASS PARTS, GASKETS, VALVE RUBBERS AS NECESSARY

8. LUBRICATE SPECIFIC WEARING PARTS SUCH AS BOTTOM END, AROUND O- RINGS AND CAPS AS THE HYDRANT IS REASSEMBLED

9. CHECK TOP END OIL (MUELLER)

10. TURN HYDRANT BRANCH VALVE ON SLOWLY WITH HYDRANT IN OPEN POSITION THROTTLE SLOWLY AFTER SMALL FLUSH AT ISOLATION VALVE

11. CHECK FOR LEAK AT BOTTOM, TOP AND PORTS WHILE UNDER PRESSURE

12. TAKE STATIC PRESSURE AND RECORD ON HYDRANT SERVICE FORM

13. SHUT DOWN HYDRANT

14. CHECK FOR SUCTION ON PORT TO ENSURE HYDRANT IS COMPLETELY SHUT OFF AND DRAINED

15. RECORD HYDRANT NUMBER CHECK ADDRESS AND LOCATION

16. COMPLETE CHECKLIST ON HYDRANT SERVICE FORM

17. REPAINT HYDRANT NUMBER ON HYDRANT IF NEEDED

18. CLEAR ANY BRUSH OR GRASS ETC. SO HYDRANT IS CLEARLY ACCESSIBLE DISTRICT OF LOGAN LAKE HYDRANT PROCEDURE'S

HYDRANT (B) SERVICE

1. CHECK TO MAKE SURE HYDRANT IS OFF WITH HYDRANT WRENCH

2. ATTACH ISOLATING VALVE WITH GAUGE TO HYDRANT'S 2 1/2 INCH PORT

3. LOCATE HYDRANT VALVE CLEANOUT IF REQUIRED

4. TURN HYDRANT FULLY OPEN WITH ISOLATING VALVE CLOSED

5. CHECK FOR LEAKS AT PORTS, TOP END AND DRAIN SYSTEM

6. RECORD PRESSURE ON HYDRANT SERVICE FORM

7. IF HYDRANT LEAKS, REVERT TO (A) SERVICE, GO TO PROCEDURE #3 (A) SERVICE

8. IF NO LEAKS OR DRAIN PROBLEMS, COMPLETE CHECKLIST ON HYDRANT MAINTENANCE FORM

9. RENEW HYDRANT NUMBER IF NEEDED

10. CLEAR ANY BRUSH OR GRASS ETC. SO HYDRANT IS CLEARLY ACCESSIBLE
