Dear Parents/Guardians s26

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I believe that homework is an essential part of a child’s education. It is valuable because it reinforces the skills taught in class, teaches responsibility, and prepares the students for the future, as homework will get much more demanding in the years to come. Homework is usually assigned on Monday through Thursday nights. It should take approximately 30 minutes to complete, give or take, depending on each individual student. At times, the students will be working on bigger projects, which may need to be finished at home. I will never give homework on a subject that has not been covered in class. Homework should be a time to reinforce skills learned during the school day. I will generally always give a little bit of math homework and students are to read a minimum of 15 minutes per night. They should also be practicing their math facts each night. Any work that was not completed in class may also become part of your child’s homework. For those nights that homework does not take as long, students should be encouraged to read for a bit longer, do research on a favorite animal, write a letter to a friend, write a journal entry, or anything else along those lines. Your child will keep track of their assignments in a homework planner. They will be responsible for writing down their assignment each day before they leave school. Please sign the bottom of the notebook after your child’s homework has been completed. I often use the notebook to communicate to parents regarding missed homework assignments, or other issues that may have come up throughout the day. It is essential for you to check your child’s assignments and assignment notebook each day. I appreciate your support in this matter! If your child has not turned in their homework the following day, he or she will be required to stay in for recess to complete the assignment. If not completed during recess, it will be required to be finished at home to be turned in the next day. In addition, they will not be able to participate in our class game, Homeworkopoly. Please take time to read and discuss the homework policy with your child. We have gone over it at school. Please sign and return the bottom portion of this letter to school tomorrow. Once again, I appreciate your support and cooperation. I truly believe that this is the time to instill good study habits in students. Homework will increase in difficulty in the years to come. If your child realizes the importance of finishing assignments early on, they will have an easier time in the future. Thank you so much for your support! Together, we can help your child to have a wonderful year in third grade!

Sincerely, Mrs. Stine  ------I have read the homework policy and have discussed it with my child. We are aware of what the homework expectations are for the year and will do our best to make this year a success!
