PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) is an award-winning charity that is having a major impact of the lives of thousands of children in sub-Saharan Africa. We build and manage a network of sustainable secondary schools across Uganda and Zambia with almost 12,000 students enrolled. We use an innovative SmartAid model which means that our run our schools are fully sustainable and independent of UK fundraising, to ensure we are permanently widening access to secondary education. Our hope is that one day every child in Africa will enjoy and benefit from a quality secondary education.

Purpose of volunteer role This exciting volunteer internship opportunity has arisen within the Communications Team. As a small, but rapidly growing charity, building the PEAS brand and cementing PEAS as thought-leader is the fields of education and international development becomes more important. We are now looking for a confident, hard-working and determined individual to help support our ambitious communications goals.

Working closely with the Communications Manager, the intern will help to identify media and speaking opportunities. The candidate will also help to manage all PEAS communications channels – including our Facebook and Twitter pages, in addition to the updating the website and newsletter.

This volunteering role would suit someone who would like to learn about communications, who is interested in developing the highly sought-after skills in both internal and external communications, and who is able to contribute their time, skills and ideas to helping to make a significant impact to PEAS. The successful candidate will gain experience in pitching media stories, writing press releases, developing blogs and implementing a social media strategy.

Job Description

 Monitoring news outlets daily to identify ‘issues jumping’ opportunities – i.e. where PEAS can comment on current news stories

 Develop media database, compiling list of media publications and relevant journalists for PEAS to pitch story ideas/blogs to

 Working with the Communications Manager to create news hooks/storylines for journalists

 Media relations – pitching guest articles to key blogs and media titles and help set-up journalist meetings with PEAS spokespeople

 Update social media channels, including Facebook and Twitter pages

 Increase Twitter following, by engaging with Twitter users and identifying Twitter influencers

 Identify blog topics and help draft content/source information for blog creation on a weekly basis

 Research Ugandan relevant celebrities and potential celebrity patrons

 Writing up case studies of our beneficiaries for use on the website

 Helping to keep the website updated with new content and stories

 Develop press releases around PEAS news when necessary

 Capturing media coverage and administrative tasks when required

PERSON SPECIFICATION

You will need to have good interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills for this position. Further information on the type of candidate we’re looking for can be found below:

Essential • A demonstrable interest in communications • Confident phone manner • Proven research and excellent writing skills • Attention to detail • Good organisational skills and the ability to work across variety of projects and activities • Computer literate with knowledge of internet search engines and experience with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) • Resident in UK or planning to be before PEAS can consider an application • Willing to commit to join us for three days a week for twelve weeks.

Desirable • Experience of office work • Experience of communications and social media • An understanding of what is required to create an interesting media story • Experience of working for a Charity in a paid or voluntary capacity
