Matapeake Middle School Summer Reading Initiative 2017

What do I have to do? 1. Read…Read…Read 2. Log how many minutes you read (online or print version) 3. Complete journal entries (at least 3)

When? All summer! Journals and reading logs are due September 8, 2017. If you logged your minutes in online, don’t forget to print out your reading log for credit.

All participants will receive:

 A certificate of participation and $15 in PBIS Sand Dollars (to be used for MMS incentives)  One FREE Rita’s Italian Ice Reading Log As you are reading this summer, don’t forget to log in your minutes. You can use the paper copy provided or use Scholastic’s online log in to keep track of your minutes. If you choose to use the online reading log to help you keep track, you are eligible to earn digital rewards, find daily tips, and have access to a variety of books lists. You can keep track of how many minutes you read and log online at http://www.scholastic.com/ups/campaigns/src-2015/kids. You must put in your username and password for your minutes to register. Can’t get online? Keep a paper reading log (a copy is included in this packet) and turn it into Mrs. Dryer by September 8th.

Journal Create at least THREE Journal Entries as you read one of your books. A successful journal entry should include recording personal insights, reflections and questions about the book you are reading. This form of reflective writing lets you demonstrate your ability to conduct a critical inquiry; questions you have as you read, thoughts about a character or conflict, predictions about what will happen next based on text evidence. Each entry should be no less than five sentences long, and should NOT contain a plot summary. Do NOT write about what happens in your book; write your thoughts about what happens in the book. You may use the attached form or a separate piece of paper. It may be handwritten or typed.

SUMMER READING INITIATIVE 2017 Dear Parent/Guardian:

Because Queen Anne’s County Public Schools wishes to foster an interest in and a habit of reading, we are continuing a summer reading program for all of our students in middle school. One of our goals in Reading/Language Arts instruction is to encourage students to become lifelong readers. In addition, we wish to assist students in improving their reading skills, and we know that students improve their reading through practice. For this reason, we are encouraging all students to continue the practice of reading throughout the summer. Our expectation is that students will complete the reading and the accompanying activities.

Attached you will find an electronic suggestion list and a description of the summer reading program. We hope that you will support our initiative by encouraging your child to read books which are new to him/her and to complete the activities outlined by your school. If you have any questions about this initiative, please contact your school’s Reading Specialist.

Date Title Minutes Summer Reading 101 for Parents Have you heard of the summer slide? Summer slide is the academic loss kids and teens experience during the extended summer break from school. Kids and teens who don’t read over the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that has a cumulative, long-term effect. Isn’t summer reading for elementary school? My child already knows how to read and isn’t going to forget. Summer reading is important all the way through high school and your kids are never too old to have you read with them. Have your child pick a book, and grab a copy for yourself too so you can discuss it as you go. Think of it as your own little book club. Comprehension is the unseen and unheard piece of reading that continues to develop throughout adolescence. Even fluent readers will experience reading loss when it comes to comprehension if they aren’t reading over the summer. Text in school becomes more and more demanding as your child progresses in school so it’s important to keep building that vocabulary and comprehension which happens best through regular reading! What should my child be reading? Anything! Interest is more important than level or format. Letting your child read what they want will keep them engaged. What are some ways to keep my child interested in reading & learning throughout the long summer? Check out the ideas below.
