President’s Message: Happy holidays to all and may we all have a healthy and fun filled 2005. I would say that our clubs holiday activities have been a glowing success. We had a gorgeous day for the Sattler parade and meeting, I'm sorry that some were unable to participate. I'm honored to be your president for another year and am grateful for those who have consented to serve the organization in the other elected offices. I especially want to thank Neal for his effort in producing an informative newsletter and putting out club announcements. The letter saves a lot of telephone time.

I conclude by asking that we all keep Jo Ann Carter in our thoughts and prayers as she grieves for Jack, a wonderful man, through this holiday season. He will be missed by all of us.

TO WAX OR NOT TO WAX By Gary Riley of Level One Restorations in Golden, Colorado Originally published in MuscleCar Enthusiast, page 100, January 2005 edition

I have a ’68 firebird that I have owned since the early ‘70’s. Recently I had the car completely repainted. The shop owner told me not to wax my paint because it is a urethane and waxing wouldn’t be necessary. I have since asked several people at car shows and seem to get a different answer every time. I wax my new car, what’s the difference? Norm Foss

First of all, Norm, congratulations on keeping your car all those years. Second, I would agree with you, opinions on this subject vary wildly. We set aside our knowledge of waxing and did a little research and learned a few things along the way.

DIFFERENT PAINTS In the ‘60’s, most cars were either painted with enamel or lacquer paint from the manufacturers. Today, due to environmental concerns, new cars and the majority of repainted old cars are sprayed with some type of high-solids paint. A high solid is different in that it can withstand UV rays from the sun better than the old enamels or lacquers. Even with an improved resistance to fading, a new car painted with modern paint will still benefit from waxing.

WAX FACTS There are two basic forms of paint protection readily available. The first is good old traditional wax, which is usually a natural substance and is harvested from things such as Carnauba trees. The second form of protection is paint sealants. Paint sealants are petroleum-based products, and are formulated to work like wax.

Wax has been around forever and its results are time tested. Its effective life span is about two to three months. Additionally, wax has a low melting point and will last a shorter time in hot climates. Paint sealants are less affected by heat and can last six to eight months. Paint sealants will not wash off and are easier to apply. Professional detailers argue that traditional wax gives a deeper shine than sealants.

WHEN TO WAX If the paint job on your car is fresh, it should not be waxed. The traditional wait time is three months. The reason for waiting is that paint is not fully cured and is still releasing chemicals, as it dries. A wax or sealant might hamper that process. A new car is a different story. A factory job is force dried with heat. As a result a new car could probable be waxed immediately. However, it would not be necessary so soon, given the quality of the factory clearcoats.

Generally, when the water no longer beads up on your car’s finish, it needs attention. Caring for your car finish goes beyond shiny paint. Waxing should be accompanied by other maintenance procedures such as checking fluid levels, and detailing interiors and the engine compartment. Another bonus is that you will look at every square inch of your car. By doing these things a person can keep up on paint chip repair or notice any loose trim pieces, etc… So you certainly should wax or seal the paint on your car, new or old.

Christmas Party A Big Success

Wow!! What a good time was had by all at the annual Christmas Party held at the Barn Door on December 11th. Over 40 members and spouses attended and brought gifts for the exchange. Cheryl Meynig brought copies of her Toffee Cookies and passed them out to all who were interested. Lots of new tools were acquired by male participants and, of course, there were several teddy bears for the ladies. C.E. Boyd, Jr. got a big bottle of “cough medicine” which made him better since he wasn’t feeling to well. Ted Lee arrived late after flying in from Canada and Andy Hoekstra ended up getting a miniature Gulf gas pump.

Jack and Jo Ann Carter had planned on attending but that was not to be. Jo Ann passed the gift of T-Bird fabric they planned to bring to Carole Buss who gave it out to a random number drawn from a hat. Carrie Copeland was the lucky recipient.
