SHSM-Specialist High Skills Major- Health and Wellness: Lorelea Rice

Applications are being received now for up to 20 students for the first year the program is being offered- intended for the students entering grade 11 in the fall. HEALS: Healthy Eating, Active Living, Sports

Humberview students have a strong interest in this area and it should fit nicely with this. Currently we have a very high percentage of students who take Physical Education beyond grade 9- approximately 70%. Humberview is hoping to see a balance of students across the pathways taking this program. 13% of jobs in Caledon are in the Health and Wellness sector.

Will take the regular core subjects but they contain a CLA- a specialized unit pertaining to the SHSM. 17 Certifications will be part of the courses: First Aid, Coaching, WHMIS, leadership

There will be one teacher per department who is part of the SHSM for Health and Wellness.

Special field trips will be offered and there will be opportunities to attend/visit workplaces, colleges and universities to see careers.

Many Community Partnerships have been developed and arranged already.

There will be a red seal on the diploma and it is recognized at the post secondary level. Some offer rewards and incentives to those who have the seal.

Rick Tredwell:

Staffing: In the position to be hiring teachers and adding to the staff at Humberview. Changes in our Secretaries, several have retired and our new budget secretary has started. Thursday is the annual Spring Concert

May 13th- PD Day- with Humberview Family of Schools

May 14- Literacy test- only those writing the test will attend school on the 14th

May 25th- DARE Fundraiser at Allan Drive Senior Public School in Bolton

Council was asked to consider 3 questions and provide email feed back to Rick.

1. Should there be rebates on fees that were charged? Agreed that there was no need to give a rebate.

2. Are there any concerns about Wi-Fi? No concerns expressed at Humberview- in the South there is concerns about safety.

3. Is the vocational program supported and are there any concerns? No concerns expressed

A council member raised the concern that with the new High Skills Major’s and the Vocational program some people have the perception that Humberview is not an academic school. A reminder to always promote Humberview as a school that meets the needs of a variety of learners and all pathways are important and valued.

Across the board high schools have about 30% of their students head to University regardless of the programs that they offer.

October 17th – The University Fair will be held at St. Michael’s. We will alternate years with them and the following year we will host the Fair.

3. Parent Survey: Jan McFadyen

Results similar to 14 months ago so the survey from then will be reused and combined with a technology survey. Results will be shared at the next meeting.

A member asked that we add a question about interest in late busing.

4. Looking Forward: Jan McFadyen

At our next school council meeting the results of the survey will be shared and we will discuss elections for council.

5. Questions/Comments:

Pathways Night- Thursday November 7th. There will be a Daytime presentation to grade 11 and 12 students and evening presentation to parents. Invite students and representatives from the pathways to speak. Summer School- not well attended at Humberview and there are no plans to offer courses in the summer again. Online summer school is popular and fills up very quickly. Because Humberview students don’t have the same access to summer school in Brampton because of transportation issues, they often access online courses. The council would like to send a letter to our trustee, the chair of the trustees and to the director of education asking that we have priority for online access because of this inequity. The guidance counsellors are doing the registration this week and will give us feedback and ideas and we should plan to send this letter out for consideration for next year’s registration.

Most summer school students from Humberview are taking a new credit. Students who do not pass a credit tend to access credit recovery at Humberview rather than going to summer school.

My Blueprint- is being implemented board wide and will be linked to the SIS- student information System. Students will be introduced to this guidance tool in grade 7 and will continue to use it throughout high school. It contains many useful features and will be valuable to help with career direction and decisions.

Calendar on school website- still contains no information, Rick will look into this.

Next Meeting: May 28th, 2013
