Scrapbooking through History
How would any of us know anything about history without someone recording it? Some cultures pass their histories down orally (by word of mouth), others write books, keep diaries, etc. One good way to record history is to scrapbook—much the way you would with a family photo album!
A scrapbook is much more than words and pictures—it is an artistic record of the past. Now for those of you who aren’t artists—don’t worry—I’m not an artist either! Here’s how this will work:
Procedure
1. You will be divided into teams
2. Each team will receive a sport to research
3. Each team will try to use their scrapbook to answer this over-arching question: Compare and contrast the early American origins of the sport with how it evolved to the present day with respect to economic, social, and technological factors.
4. Your scrapbook will consist of 6 total 12”x12” pages:
You will create a title page, as well as one page for each of the following questions:
Why did the sport change in the way it did? What were the specific changes (i.e. rules? Innovations? Technological advances? Socio- economic changes?) How did it change? Were the changes positive, negative, or both? And why? Who benefited/suffered from the changes?
5. Each page should have a typed thesis statement that reflects your team’s answer to the question (the title page will answer the over-arching question)
6. The thesis statement will be the only WORDS on the page, the rest of your explanation must be done with images from your sport
Expectations Each page should: Be well organized Contain at least one typed thesis Creative Well-researched Relevant! Spellchecked and proofed for grammar Demonstrates critical thinking Scrapbook Project Rubric
