Dear Educator s1

Johnson County Conservation District

August 14, 2017

Dear Educator,

We have scheduled the 10th annual Johnson County Slice of Ag Day. The dates for the 4th Grade event are January 9th & 10th at the Overland Park Convention Center. It incorporates agriculture, conservation, environment, safety, health and nutrition into curriculum and learning experiences that align with Kansas academic standards. The programs’ goal is to educate youth about where their food supply comes from and to gain an appreciation for Kansas and local agriculture.

A favorite food among fourth graders is pizza. The learning stations that are part of this field trip are divided into eight pieces like a pizza. Each learning station demonstrates some element of agriculture to the students. They will be able to see, touch, and learn about what grain farmers grow for the crust, tomatoes for the sauce, the dairy cows that give milk to make cheese, and even pigs for pepperoni. There will be large farm equipment for them to experience and a soils trailer to learn about erosion and conservation. In a unique and entertaining way, visitors to the Slice of Agriculture field trip quickly learn they would not be able to enjoy their favorite foods without a farmer.

As a participating classroom in the Slice of Agriculture program you will receive a Slice of Ag CD with lesson plans that are easy to incorporate into your current schedule. This website can further explain the program www.Johnson.ksu.edu/slice-of-ag

There will be a $2 per student cost for the event. However, if you have students that this would be a hardship for, we will have a scholarship fund set up as well. The Slice of Ag committee will pay for the buses again this year.

For planning purposes we need to know if you will be able to attend and the approximate number of students from your school. Please reply with information on the attached form as soon as possible. Schools are included on a first come first serve basis. If you have any questions, call or e-mail Gayla.

Sincerely,
