Centreville United Methodist Church Upward Basketball™ 2017 Coaches Handout (amended 5 Jan 17, post coach clinic)
1. General—key source https://centrevilleupward.com/volunteer-resources/resources/ a. All coaching clinic handouts will be on the website b. Also check out your “My Team Page” 2. Youth Assistant Coaches—many are graduated players. Assign them meaningful duties (track substitution pattern, issue star awards, run a drill at practice, conduct devotions). Adult coaches should make a conscientious effort to bring their youth ACs in as full partners. 3. Calendar (Midnight Madness--6 Jan, First Practice--7 Jan, Picture Day—4 Feb, Awards Event--25 Mar) 4. Review Coach Playbook at your convenience but before the first practice 5. Centreville Upward modifications to/implementation of the Upward Rules found in the Coach Playbook a. (new for 2017) The Coach Playbook and Referee Manual refers to rules associated with Level I (Kinderg), II (1st-2nd grade), III (3rd-4th grade) and IV (5th-8th grade) play. The Centreville Upward rules enumerated in this handout supersede the Upward manuals and in the event of any conflicts with Upward rulebooks, the rules enumerated below will apply. In short, we apply modifications to Levels I-III rules and we do not follow Level IV rules. b. Wristbands used for player matchups, green wristbands for personal fouls c. One clock for both courts, stops only for injury timeout (play cont on the other court) d. 3rd-6th grade fouls in game’s final 2 mins = automatic points; Non-shooting fouls = 1 pt and possession; Shooting fouls = 2 pts; Shooting fouls w/ made basket = 3 pts e. All fouls in K-2nd grade divisions are non-shooting (takes too long to line them up) f. We may adjust the clock to either gain/lose time to keep on gameday schedule g. One 3-min OT in 3rd-6th grade, penalty points for fouls continue throughout OT h. Mercy rule—rolling 20 point max differential in scores for 3rd-6th grade divisions i. No spread/isolation offenses. No double teaming—ever. And double teaming includes when a non co-wristband wearer steals the ball from a defended dribbler. j. No sandwich screens (simultan screens on a defender). Teach no moving screens. k. Defenders remain within arms-length of their co-wristband opponent at all times. No help defense EVER in K-2nd grades. Help defense exemptions for 3rd-6th grades: i. Fast Break—one defender may move to cover an open ball handler but must return to his/her designated opponent when the fast break transitions to a half court set. Under no circumstance may a defender double team a dribbler on a fast break ii. Help/recover—during a pick, defenders may temporarily switch guarded opponents to ensure the dribbler remains guarded, must switch back ASAP. iii. Unguarded ball handler in the lane—in a half court set, a defender may leave his co-wristband opponent to temporarily guard an uncovered ball handler who is inside the lane and as long as the defender’s co-wristband wearer is in arms reach l. (new for 2017) Stealing from the ball handler and stealing the ball off a pass are not permitted in Kindergarten division. Fast breaks are allowed in Kindergarten m. Only two ball sizes this season per Upward guidelines. 25” for K-2nd. 28.5” for 3rd-6th. Goal heights are K = 7.5’. 1st-2nd = 8’. 3rd-4th= 9’. 5th – 6th = 10’. iv. No end of season trophies. Pizza parties & individual certificates are ok 6. Inclement Weather a. Centreville Upward does NOT follow Fairfax County Public School closings b. Weather decisions posted on the cumcupward.com website. c. Bye date or makeup gameday is 18 Feb. Regular practices both weeks.
7. Cheerleaders a. One squad ~ 60 min “games” start at bottom of hour b. Seats at center jump circle. Cheer equally for both teams “go Upward!” not “go Bulls!” 8. Secure basketballs (spectators included). Give the Upward devotion tool during practice 7 (6-10 Feb for 1st-6th, 25 Feb for K). Coaches book has 11 devotions but 12 practices for 1st-6th. For devotion 12, perhaps have players tell what they learned about basketball and God this season. 9. Uniforms & Coaches Kits. a. Coaches will issue uniforms to players at Midnight Madness on 6 Jan.
