Answers 1. How is printer speed measured? cps = characters per second lpm = lines per minute ppm = pages per minute 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your choices for paper? Continuous-form paper: advantage - less expensive, do not need to replace paper often. Disadvantage - may need to separate pages and remove strips with perforations Single sheet paper: advantage - can change to specialty papers like letterhead or slick for photos or envelopes. Disadvantage - must add paper more often 3. How is print quality measured? Which is the best quality? A numerical measure is printer resolution in dots per inch (dpi). LQ = letter quality - as good as best typewriter can produce NLQ = near letter quality - nearly as good as letter quality Draft = poor quality suitable only for testing and internal use 4. What is the difference between impact and non-impact printers? Impact printers have a mechanism that physically pushes the character forming device against the print ribbon and paper underneath it. Non-impact printers form characters with ink or toner without actually hitting the paper. 5. What are the main kinds of impact printers? How do they form their characters? What are their advantages and disadvantages? Dot matrix - uses sets of pins to form characters. Advantage - inexpensive, does multicopy forms. Disadvantage - slow and loud Daisy wheel - uses a circle of typewriter-type petals with characters fully formed. Advantage - best print quality. Disadvantage - very slow and can’t print graphics. Chain and band printers - have typewriter type characters on a moving band or chain. Advantage - very fast. Disadvantage - very expensive and very loud 6. What are the main kinds of non-impact printers? How do they form their characters? What are their advantages and disadvantages? Ink jet - forms character by spraying ink onto paper. Advantage - quiet, high quality text, does graphics, some do color. Disadvantage - cannot use multiple-copy paper, ink can smear Thermal - uses heat on chemically treated paper to form characters. Advantage - quiet. Disadvantage - fairly slow, expensive, needs special paper, can not use multiple-copy paper Page printer - like a copy machine uses toner and heat bar to form characters. Advantage - quiet, faster than other non-impact printers, high quality print and graphics, some do color. Disadvantage - more expensive than impact printer, cannot use multiple-copy paper
7. What are the various names used for display device that looks like a television? Monitor, screen, VDT = video display terminal, CRT = cathode ray tube. 8. What are the RGB and the CMYK color systems? Which is used for what? RGB = red, green, blue All colors are formed using phosphor dots on screen with these three colors of dots. CMYK = cyan, magenta, yellow, black All colors are formed using printed dots in these 4 colors. 9. Why would you want an interlaced screen? How does that work? An interlaced screen has less visible flicker because it lights up every other row of phosphor dots on the screen before returning to the top to light the other set of dots. 10. What is the refresh rate? What would a desirable refresh rate be? Refresh rate is how often a screen is redrawn from top to bottom. A minimum refresh rate that is comfortable to the eye is 60 times per second. 75 or higher is even better and may be necessary for some people on some monitors.
