The AT Still University Still Research Institute Center for Oral Health Research and the Arizona Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research invite you to attend our inaugural Scientific Symposium: “Supporting Best Practices in Education and Patient Care” Saturday, January 21, 2017, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm
The first scientific symposium co-sponsored by the ATSU SRI Center for Oral Health Research and the Arizona Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research will be held on Saturday January 21, 2017 at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health in Mesa, Arizona. Our target audience is comprised of an interdisciplinary audience of dental and dental hygiene clinicians, academicians and researchers, dental and dental hygiene students, nurses, physicians and scientific and industry partners from Arizona and the surrounding region.
The Conference is designed to bring the Arizona state oral healthcare and research communities together to: . Share new knowledge obtained through original research . Translate current findings from research to support best practices . Increase and diversify the number of individuals engaged in oral health research . Cultivate collaborative partnerships to improve the oral health of the community
Session Objectives:
Current Topics in Oral Cancer Research and Oral Cancer Screening, Brian Schmidt, DDS, MD, PhD 1. Explore recent advances made in the diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer. 2. Discuss the benefits and limitations of chair side diagnostic devices used to detect oral cancer. 3. Discuss best practices related to detecting, managing and counseling patients with oral cancer.
The State of the Art of Dental Composite Restorative Materials, Jack Ferracane, PhD 1. Discuss current trends in the use of dental composite restorative materials. 2. Describe considerations related to material selection with related outcomes. 3. Discuss best practices for use of dental composite restorative materials based upon available evidence.
Impact of Oral Hygiene Care on Patient Outcomes in the ICU, Virginia Prendergast, PhD, C-NP, Cindy Kleiman, RDH, BS 1. Discuss threats to oral health among hospitalized patients. 2. Discuss approaches to conducting a bedside oral assessment. 3. Describe methods of oral care that are safely tolerated among patients in the ICU. 4. Describe the impact of oral healthcare on patient outcomes for individuals who are critically ill.
Current Clinical Practice Guidelines for Managing Diabetes, JoAnn Gurenlian, RDH, PhD 1. Discuss the epidemic of diabetes with related implications for systemic health. 2. Describe the relationship between diabetes and oral health. 3. Identify and discuss published clinical practice guidelines for managing patients with diabetes. 4. Describe best practices for improving oral and systemic health outcomes among patients with diabetes.
Increasing Student Engagement with Evidence-Based Decision Making, Jane Forrest, RDH, EdD 1. Identify available resources for designing effective learning strategies and that promote student engagement and becoming good consumers of the research literature. 2. Discuss how to incorporate critical thinking, student reflective and self-evaluation questions into current curriculum. 3. Explain how documentation of student learning outcomes support achievement of CODA Standards and competencies related to evidence-based practice and critical thinking.
