3 Teaching Plan on Food and fruits - To enrich students’ knowledge about names of fruits and traditional country food - To extend students’ vocabulary in verbs related to cooking and adjectives related to the country of origin. - To encourage students to learn about food and fruits through reading a story.

Materials: - Task 1: Appendix 1 (Theme 3 Matching cards) - Task 2: Picture and word cards (verbs- cooking), Worksheet 1 - Task 3: Traditional country food picture cards (from task 1), country adjectives cards (from task 1), Worksheet 2, Worksheet 3 - Task 4: Worksheet 4, Online Story (What’s your favourite food?) http://www.genkienglish.net/picturebookfoodanimals.htm

Tasks: Task 1 – What do you like to eat ? Target items: Fruit names, Traditional food names Materials: Matching cards (pictures (fruits, traditional food), fruits and traditional food name cards)

Steps: Level 1 (for less able students): 1. Divide students in pairs and give out a set of matching cards. 2. The students will lay all the name cards on the table. 3. Divide the picture cards among the two students. 4. Student A will draw a card from student B and say “I like to eat ____.” and place that picture card on the matching name card. If the matching is correct, the student will get to keep the pair of cards. 5. The student who is first to get 5 pairs of cards is the winner.

Level 2 (for more able students): 1. Divide students in pairs and give out a set of matching cards 2. The students will mix the cards up and divide them into two piles. 3. Student A and Student B have to hold their cards facing down, so neither of them can read the pictures or names. 4. Both students will then turn their top cards over and say whatever the picture/ word is. 5. If the students have the same traditional food name and picture, they will have to say “I like to eat ______.” as fast as they can. Whoever says the sentence first will get to keep the pair of cards. 6. The student who is first to get 5 pairs of cards is the winner.

4 Task 2 – Cookery Club Target items: Verbs (Cooking) Materials: Picture and word cards (verbs- cooking), Worksheet 1

Steps: 1. Teacher introduces a role play game of a cookery club where she is the chef and students are helpers. 2. Teacher teaches the students all the cooking techniques by going through the pictures and words. 3. Teacher gives out a set of picture and word cards between each pair of students and asks them to lay out all the 20 cards on the table with pictures and words facing up. 4. Students have to take turns in matching the pictures with the correct word. 5. Students complete worksheet 1.

Task 3 – My favourite country food Target items: Traditional country food Materials: Traditional country food picture cards (from task 1), country adjectives cards (from task 1), Worksheet 2 (for less able students), Worksheet 3 (for more able students)

Steps: 1. Teacher shows students pictures of traditional country food and asks students their experience in eating different traditional country food. 2. Teacher asks students to name some of their favourite traditional Chinese food. 3. Teacher talks to students about different countries and their traditional country food. 4. Students are to complete the worksheet about traditional country food.

Task 4 – What ’s your favourite food? Target items: fruits names Materials: Worksheet 4, Online Story (What’s your favourite food?) http://www.genkienglish.net/picturebookfoodanimals.htm

Steps: 1. Teacher asks students if they know what food animals like to eat.. 2. Teacher writes the names of food on the board. 3. Teacher reads the story with the students and asks students about the food in the story 4. Students complete the worksheet based on the food in the story and write their own favourite food.
