 Professor of Family Therapy, Department of Human Development, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA; returned to full time faculty status in July, 2011.

Teach doctoral courses in family therapy and undergraduate courses in the human services program. Actively involved in research, publication, consultation, and doctoral committees. Also, serve as Editor of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.

Provided leadership to the college in the areas of graduate studies, research, diversity, outreach, and faculty development. Provide leadership to a multifacited department that includes 26 full-time faculty, 19 staff, and four centers on two campuses. Graduate program areas within the Department of Human Development include Child and Adolescent Development, Family Studies, Marriage and Family Therapy, Adult Development and Aging, and Adult Learning and Human Resource Development. The undergraduate program in Human Services includes four areas of concentration.

 Professor, Department of Child Development and Family Studies, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana; came to Purdue in August 1982 as assistant professor; professor in 1990; August 1982 to July, 2000.

Director of the COAMFTE-accredited family therapy doctoral program from 1995-2000. Taught doctoral courses in family therapy. Actively involved in program administration, practicum supervision, research, publication, consultation, and doctoral committees. Limited private practice.

 Visiting Professor, Department of Psychology, Atma Jaya University, and Researcher, Atma Jaya Research Center, Jakarta, Indonesia; August 1996 to June 1997.

For my sabbatical year at Atma Jaya University, Jakarta, Indonesia, I worked as a professor and team member on HIV/AIDS prevention research projects. One was a participatory research study to better understand the HIV-risk behaviors of underserved youth in three Indonesian cities. The other was to train 15 nongovernment organizations in how to use qualitative methods to evaluate their HIV prevention projects. I also co-authored a grant to develop alcohol/drug - safer sex training modules to be included in existing HIV prevention programs for street children, commercial sex workers, and school children. I also gave workshops at several universities in Indonesia and the Philippines.

 Visiting Scholar, University of Indonesia, Indonesia Second University Development Project, Jakarta; June -August 1988; May-June 1989; May 1990 and May 1991; July-August 1992; July 1993.

Consultant on large five-year research project related to the effects of modernization in urban Indonesia. Supervised research and gave seminars on families/family therapy, delinquency, and drug abuse. Principal investigator and workshop leader for AIDS prevention project funded by the World AIDS Foundation.

 Assistant-Associate Professor (with tenure), Department of Counseling and Guidance, Texas A&M Commerce, Commerce, Texas.; August 1975 to August 1977 (half-time joint appointment with University Counseling Center); August 1977 to August 1982 (full time).

Taught graduate and undergraduate courses in counseling. Actively involved in the AAMFT-accredited marriage and family therapy program emphasis, internship supervision, consultation, research, publication, and graduate committees. Co-developer of the Marriage, Family, and Child Consultation Center (MFCCC), a training, research, and community service center. From 1979-1981 served as Clinical Director of the MFCCC. Chairman or member of over 50 doctoral dissertation committees.

Conducted individual, marital, and group psychotherapy. Led developmental programs in assertion training, couples enrichment, and successful parenting. Coordinated Marriage and Family Relations Program, and supervised doctoral interns in marriage and family therapy. Coordinated staff development, action research, and public relations for the Center. Active consultant for university and community groups.

 Counselor, Undergraduate Studies Office, University of Florida, Gainesville; August 1974 to August 1975 (full time).

Provided academic and personal counseling for undergraduate students in education.

Also, doctoral chairman for the 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007 winners of the nationally competitive Graduate Student Research Award of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Also chaired the doctoral committee of the 1986, 1988, 1990, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 winners of the AAMFT Dissertation Award, as well as the winner of the national Fahs Beck Research Award, 1992, and winner of the Family Process Dissertation Grant, 2011.
